    checking timing chain?

    Hi All

Is there any way I can check my timing belt for wear etc?
I don’t know when the last time it was inspected/changed.

I was always under the impression that if you got to the trouble of checking the belt/chain you might as well change it; is this the same on a Rangie or is this just a mechanics Urban Myth?

If it the V8 then I would agree, they are a prety hardcore set up from memory, I do miss the sound of a V8 but not the consumption

unless the belt housing has been modded with an inspection cover by the time you pull everything out to get an eyeball onto it you migh as well change it.

Timing chains are cheap, so it would be an advantage to change it out while apart if any signs of wear. Timing chains do last a lot longer and do not break like belts and should not need replacement. If you are talking belts, yep then change them out if you have the front off, cheap insurance.

replace the plastic cog on ther V8 at the same time. The main reason why you should never rev the nuts of a V8 at Idle.

The plastic or Nylon timing Sprocket is the large one attached to the camshaft.
They are a pretty flimsy looking looking item. If you are going to spend hours pulling the dizzy out, the harmonic balancer, the timing cover housing off and reseal the timing cover oil seal, stuff the oil pump with vaseline to aid in re priming then I would definately replace the timing chain.
I replaced mine with a duplex double chain with new STEEL sprockets, will lessen chain stetch and spocket wear. And for $100 better spent than the $40 for the flimsy ones

And if your rangie has done more than 180- 200k then fit a new cam/lifters while you have the cover off.
