You all remember my Defender, 300tdi new head oh, just a couple of weeks ago.

Been back to mechanic several times since, leaks, disappearing coolant...

Left it there when I went to Hobart for a few days, they put it on the dyno and wound it up, pressure test the wazoo out of everything, couldn't lose coolant, couldn't blow anything up.

So, I pick it up on Saturday morning on my way home from the airport.

    Couple of weeks later.

I'm driving up to Newcastle to visit some friends.

Drives like a dog, each time we hit an incline I'm into frantic downshifting, never make it to 110 except on a hu-uge downhill run. Don't even ask about going up hills.

Open it up when we get there. Hmmm, the oil level is very high.

So, who wants to guess what's wrong, and how long it is going to be in the shop for?

I'm suspecting that the drive up to Brisbane will not be happening New Years week.

Can't wait for the New Year, maybe my luck will change.

    Cheers
    Simon

Sorry to hear your woes are still persisting. With the power issues check your air filter and the intake piping. Hope your not looking at a cracked head. Is the oil strait oil or does it have that fuel smell?

It would be one solution even if not ideal.

Or get one closer to home.

    Maybe?

    Thanks for the thought.

My plan is more along the lines of - return to mechanic and pick up the keys when they have fixed it.

Having spent thousands in the last few weeks replacing the head I'm assuming that there is a certain guarantee of the vehicle working when I get it back.

Having already returned to the mechanic with possible head gasket, or whatever, problems since the new head has been in, I'm sure they won't be surprised to get my call.

Wishful thinking, but I'd be rather jolly if they had a car for me to borrow for the couple of weeks after Christmas.

Have to say that I'm somewhat reluctant to take my oh-so-competent 4wd actually off road anymore, which is rather sad.

    Cheers

Check for fuel in the oil. Mine (Td5) had the same symptoms and eventually started running on the extra fuel in the sump and I nearly couldn't turn it off.

Mine is a cracked head but a leaking injector seal can do it as well, probably more likely in your case.

Spoke to mechanic today, he thought fuel into oil too. I haven't found any of those over run problems.

Hmmm, cracked head you say. I'm not so optimistic anymore to think that it might be the cheap easy problem.

When I called first to have a chat about get the head gasket done I asked about price. He mentioned two. I wanted to think, 'oh well, it doesn't seem that bad, I'm sure it'll be at the lower end.' When I questioned him further as to what made the final price high or low he mentioned replacing engines and such.

Well, so far on this repair I've spent another 15% on the highest price in the range suggested and no replacement engine yet.

And, of course, I couldn't afford to pay the premiums on the monthly comprehensive insurance, so that's gone.

I would have thought that fuel in the oil in a Tdi would be more likely an injector problem (seals, or a sticking injector perhaps). In the Td5 the fuel actually runs through the head. Mine collected 3L of fuel in the sump before it went ballistic!

Of course it's the more expensive option, isn't it always??

I was only guessing after reading about yours I think.
abaddonxi Hang in there. Mine went the same way. Oh a head that can't be be to bad. Followed by quotes of 6-10,000 if I make them do it. I spent thousands doing mine and I did all the non specialist work like stripping and cleaning everything and reassembly. The experts did all the machining and welding type work.

I'm getting a bare head (Td5) from the Uk for 450 pounds. John Craddock have 300 Tdi heads complete for 250 pounds.

Umm, you guys know I did just pay to have a NEW head put on about a fortnight ago?

I have trouble believing that even I could destroy that much work in that short a time.

I haven't driven 1000km on the new head. It has spent more time in the mechanic's workshop getting stuff fixed up after the new head than it has on the road.

    Cheers
