    D90 Suspension

OK Guys - time to upgarde my suspension on the 90.

    Here are the needs:
    - Towing 2.4 tonne boat
    - Moderate touring and off road
    - dont want a too hard ride
    - Dont mind slight lift of 1-2 inches
    - Dont want any vibrations or have to alter driveshafts etc
    - Dont want to lose steering control
    - currently running 265x75x16 and 33x11.5s may fit 285's but happy to keep tyre size at stock rolling diameter of 32" if need be..

    What do i do?
1- fit poly airs to stock suspension
2- fit OME kit with HD front and MD rear alone or with polyairs
3- go to a specialist like ritters or someone else you recommend

Anyway, fire away with any suggestions....all appreciated

and by the way - the boat gives the 90 some major sag....to the point where a lift would and some beef in the rear springs would help level things out a bit.....

put a weight distribution hitch on, my mates boat has one and he is towing a 2 ton boat with a ford territory, work's very nicely indeed !!

    boat

hey def-90 i've towed my boat (about 2 ton) with my 90 with 2" lift and nearly no sag (not HD springs either), 1st thing is to check that the weight distribution on the trailer is correct, you shouldn't actually have much weight on your towball, and check the height of your towball the the level height of the trailer coupling so that they are level - you may have to make a dropped tow coupling to make it level so that you are not carrying too much weight on ya t'ball.

but i'd go a medium rating on your springs with poly airs so you can have the best of both worlds! nothing worse then a HD spring that will carry heavy loads well but if you have no weight bumps around the place and gives no up travel!!

Actually my hitch sits a bit low for the trailer so thats one point to look at. Weight on the ball is OK, its more the hitch ball alignment. I will look at changing the tongus set up too.

Otherwise, do you think the HD front and MD rear with poly airs is a better set up than a specialists set up?

I am looking at upgrading the springs and shocks on my 90 at the moment too.

Perhaps you could try Les Richmond Automotive. I spoke with Andrew there who seems to be very knowledgeable when it comes to Land Rover suspensions. Although he said that they haven’t done too many 90’s, he was very helpful with his advice about which springs and shocks to use on my 90. Andrew suggested a fairly light duty front spring as my 90 doesn’t have a winch or a heavy bullbar, (Still has the factory Nudge bar) and a medium duty rear spring with Bilstien Shocks. (May need to get the shocks re-valved to the comfort setting though.)

If you give him call with your needs I’m sure that he will point you in the right direction.

However if you are leaning towards the OME shocks and springs, have a look at this website www.expeditionexchange.com It seems to be more helpful than the local ARB salesman.

Even though it’s a US website there seems to be a lot of good information about using OME shocks and springs on NAS spec 90’s. I guess the only thing to consider with this is that the TD5 is a heavier engine that the 3.5 V8 that most of the NAS spec 90’s are fitted with.

In regard to fitting polyairs, I have used them a few years ago in a 96 Pajero SWB and I found them to work well when loaded up or towing.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

In lieu of "real" airbag suspension Polyairs or equivilent on medium/soft coils get my vote.
