    Hi Phil,
I have driven the Army TD5 Def with auto boxes in them..they were sensational. They have now been removed & put back to original.
They were just test vehicles for the Army.
I have also driven 1 other private vehicle & it is so much nicer in my opinion. You will need the wiring & Auto ECU & lots of time..

A mate of mine in the Brisbane LR club converted his '97 300TDi defender to a ZF auto when it was brand new. He got a box and t-case from a smashed disco 300Tdi auto.

It was basically a completely bolt-in job. Converting a TD5 should be as easy. Just make sure you get one from a TD5 and not a V8. You can make a V8 one fit a TD5, but the shift pattern is hard to get right.

What sort of cash are we talking about for the TD5 auto conversion?. I'm just about at the end of my tether with regard to clutches, master cylinders etc...(4 in 70 000kms).

well the NAS center console costs $600-$700.
youde need a good oil cooler. $200 and lines??
maybe mod the gearbag cross member
    need a shifter
the box is anywhere between $1500 untested or up to $3000 tested?? then there is the computer and wiring that would be needed....
probably need to shorten the rear prop shaft, maybe move the exhaust...

    could cost alot

    cheers phil

My rear prop shaft had a spacer in it. The new one I got from ace is longer so no need for the spacer.

I can get a ZF 5 speed from a BMW 7 series but I'm not certain about how to sort the control module. Otherwise I would love the extra gear for cruising.

And for those who are wondering I love the auto!
