    Tyres.....again

I am up for new tyres soon so I popped into Widetread to ask a few questions. I have done a search on this but it came up with Grimace 'POS' Rangie.....don't know how I got that.

Anyway, here are some issues which I am looking at. I mainly do touring stuff with the wife, kids and van and do less that 20% offroad, so I would be looking for more of a road tyre. I am looking for a bit of longevity.

The tyre tech stated the following:

    235/70 x 16 for a Discovery II Td5.

    Michelin XPC - 100,000 k's plus, $400 plus
    BFG AT - 80,000 k's plus, $245
    Michelin Synchrome - 60,000 k's, $275
    Hankook RA23 - 50,000 k's, $195
    Pirelli Scorpions - 80,000 k's, $ 225
He didn't even want to know about Bridgestone Duellers 694....too skatey in the wet when half worn.

My question is...can anyone back these claims up?

    Cheers.
    Lyndon.

I had 225/75 16 BFG AT KOs on my Rodeo. I got 70,000 kms out of them before they were toast. However they did a fair bit of off road work. I remember smoking them on uphill rock climbs sometimes
They weren't totally worn and I might have squeezed another 10,000 kms of road use out of them.

I'd be happy to get them again for my Disco.

    Tyres

We have always had Michelin XPC for the wifes D2, great allround tyre but 100,000k I dont think so. With good rotation and our D2 having ACE fitted we were pushing to get 70 - 75000k out of them. $400 ea is exy should be around $345 - $365. Not sure about the Synchrome, dont know anyone who has them.

Just got 100,000 ks out of a set of BFG AT KO's 275/70 R 16 on my wifes GU Patrol.

I'll be honest we didn't do as much off road on them as I would have liked, mainly highway but just bought another set I was so happy with them.

I put $140 K-Mart Kuhmos on my wifes Range Rover (215/85R16) and they lasted 120,000km. Probably more given that they actually provide a bit of overdrive with their wider diameter. I couldn't get them again, so now I'm running Sumitomo Serengetis (same size). The secret is to keep the pressure to 50psi .

I'm glad you're not considering Coopers.

Suggest you buy Toyo Opats. You will not be dissapointed. Excellent grip on bitumen, wet or dry and quiet. Look like getting 90,000 kms from them. Cost? $180 each fitted and balanced from Tyrepower.
By the way, I got 120,000 kms from a set of Michelin Synchrones and would have used them again if it was not for the cost but the Toyos seem equal in grip, wet ot dry.

ps, try Tyrepower in Scoresby, FTG road or the Bulleen branch which has large stocks of the Toyos and were a little cheaper.

I have BFG AT's fitted and they have been a good tyre and have had no punctures. They have done around 40K on them and i don't think i will get anywhere near 80K, keep in mind i did the simpson desert along with the old ghan railway line, oodanadatta track and the strzelecki track.

will probably buy them again, my mate has just fitted the pirelli's, keen to see how they go.

funny thing is the two that were replaced under warrently have just been subjected to a call back, they got replaced the other week
