Not another tyre thread...

Anybody run 255/85's BF muddies on a Defender with stock suspension?

I'm reasonably sure that noddy does, but to my understanding they fit woth no real problems to a stock defender.

I just bought 5 new 255/85/R16 Maxxis MT-762 Bighorns from "Kewdale secondhand tyres" (YES they sell new ones too).

Hi Andre - thanks for the info. I want to know the answer to the above as well. Feel free to PM the price if you don't want to post... What rims do you have them on.

P.S. - for those worrying about scrubbing with 255s. There MAY be some rubbing of the rear spring towers, unless you have 130 rims or disco rims with +10mm offset or thereabouts.

I ran my IIA wheels (285/75-16 MTRs on +30mm offset disco rims) on my 110 for a while - the extra 30mm offset meant they didn't rub anywhere on the inside, instead the rears rubbed the top of the wheel arch/flare.

greg, 32 9.5 r16 will be 235 85 r16 stock defender size so yes they will fit, the 32 10.5's should also go really close to fitting also!

All up, the 5 tyres were about $1350 inc fitting and balancing etc.

Suspension is standard height King Springs, and standard Boge Shockies.

I have them mounted on Disco 1 rims. I had the centres moved by Summerfield Engineering. I asked for 25mm, but they said they would only move the centres in as far as the lip goes, and if I wanted any more I had to have them reversed. When I picked them up and re-measured, I think they ended up being moved in about 16mm (there was a 2mm variation between the 5 rims), but I would need to compare to a standard Disco rim to be sure. It turns out to be pretty much perfect for the 255's though. I haven't fully articulated yet, but at about half, the tyres only rub on the inside lip at the rear end of the rear flares. I'm planning to trim it a bit with a Rotary Tool, using a couple of car ramps on a few bits of timber to cross axle it.
I haven't taken the tyres offroad though, because I'm paranoid about the extra weight on the rear door, so I'm waiting for my Mantec wheel carrier to arrive. That was supposed to be today, but the ship was apparently delayed and should now be here within the next fortnight :mad:
