3" dia. precleaner - Safari Snorkel - Defender

I went looking for a precleaner to suit the Safari Snorkel in my 300tdi today. I had bought a precleaner for a mates 200tdi just before we did the Simpson, a few months ago. ARB wanted about $80 and I got one from the local truck store for $29 .

However trying to find one to suit a 3" diameter Snorkel, which the 300tdi has, is proving difficult. The truck place couldn't find one in either the Donaldson or Fleetguard catalogues and then I went to ARB who told me I'd have to get a rubber adaptor and fit a precleaner with a 3 & 3/4 diam. intake. The problem with these is they're about a foot wide - just asking for trouble.

Has anyone been able to source a compact precleaner with a 3" diameter anywhere? If so, where? and who makes them? Part No. perhaps?

    Thanks, Michael2

Yep, I've got one. I had it on my Rangie. I got it from Berrima Diesel at a 4WD show. I'll have a look tonight to see if I have the part no. at home.

    Hi Michael,

I think the 10" or 12" Donaldson have a 3 " collar, but if like me you find them a bit big looking then go to your local exhaust shop and ask them to flare out a piece of 2 1/2" pipe to 3" and you can then use the 7" donaldson, just paint it black and it will only add about 1-2" to the height of the snorkel.

    Thanks Guys,

I'll see if Ron can get me a p/n, otherwise I'll try the exhaust pipe mod.

Donaldson also do a later version of the old bowl type called a "Topspin"
It is physically bigger than the bowl type but does not need cleaning as the dust is propelled out a side vent by a paddle driven by the air flow.
They come in three inch . I have one for my Rangie snorkel.
    Look at the Donaldson site.

so what one do i need for the safari snorkle on my 200tdi, and where can I get one ?

(I ask because last time Mrs Vlad drove it the mesh part at the front disappeared ?! and so its a good a time as any to replace the 'ram' with a precleaner I reckon).
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

They certainly get plenty of dust in them in dusty conditions. But due to the noise (TD5 D2), mine doesn't get much use.

It probably depends on where you drive - I would expect the situation they would be most use is where driving as a group on unsealed roads, either leaving insufficient gap between vehicles or when there is no wind at all and the dust just hangs around for long periods.
I have never felt the need to have one, or even a snorkel, for that matter. On the other hand the precleaner on the tractor really works hard - often when ploughing you work in a cloud of dust, particularly when the wind is following!
