    Rangie auto and t/f type

I apologise if my search skills have been found lacking, but....

I have an 83 Rangie and am trying to work out which auto and transfer it has. The transfer lever is well behind the auto selector and only selects Low, Neutral and High, and it has a vacuum plunger to the side of the tunnel which I assume is the CDL.

Can anybody tell me which transmission it is and which transfer it is? Also, if it is a strong setup that will handle the rough and tumble in the bush and 35's?
    Cheers

Sounds like its a borg warner 35 auto and lt95 transfer, and the BW won't handle a 3.5 and 31's given a hard time in the bush

Sam Overton had a post on Outer Limits about these, damned if I can find it.

Do you want to post or pm a pic? The books I've got here show the t/case lever in front, when the auto was released. Talks about the Torqueflite, but doesn't look like the torqueflite shifter. Also refers to an update when the CDL was combined with the t/case, obviuosly the intoduction of the LT230.

No reference to the Borg Warner. Was that a local conversion? I can't remember.

    Is it a 3 speed or a 4 speed?

In 83 they were converted by a company in Girraween in Sydney for Rover. They used the 727 Torque flight and the B/warner units.
These were modified in 2 ways.
    1) The original LT95 was machined out and the auto was fitted inside. So looking at it, it would look like a normal LT95.

    2) The LT95 was machined to fit onto the auto like a LT230 so looking at it you will clearly see the auto pan.

If it is a 727 Torque flight it will handle the 35's etc.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that Rovercare. Thats not the news that I was hoping for.

Tusker, I'll take a pic today and post it. I've got this pic, though the gearsticks are a little obscured. I'll also do a search on Outerlimits and see what I can turn up, especially about the BW. Its a shame, I've no doubt that the torque flights are cheap, but the LT230 behind them wont be.

Dobbo, I'm pretty sure its a 3 speed judging by the gear levers, but I haven't driven it enough to count them off yet.
    Cheers

No worries slunnie, and the rest of you geezers should realise it's a lt95, with H-L on the lever only and vac operated centre diff lock, it'll either de a C4 or BW35 and judging by what you said about the location of the transfer lever its borg warner, take a pic either under the car, or inside with relative posi of transfer lever and auto shifter or better yet both

    Hang on

You can diffreniate between the 2 as the auto shift is closer to the driver in the BW and the transfer case leaver is further back (they moved the whole transfer case back about 6 inches) , whereas the C4 is central and the transfer leaver is in the same spot as the 4 speed manual.
These were converted to Rangies by either by Leyland or by the specalist (Ritters in Vic. did the C4 conversion for years) until late 1983 when the 727 Chrysler torque-flyte was introduced, with the seperate LT230 transfer case. The old 4 speed manual, which was a one peice unit where both the early autos were adapted either by cutting the main box off and adapting it this way (as the C4) or the bellhousing was removed, and a custom shaft passes through the void in the box on the BW (where the 4 speed manual was) and adapted that way.
The ZF was inttroduced in Aus. in Jan 86 with the EFI 3.5 unleaded fuel V8 as well. Stil the best auto of the bunch and worth the extra few dollars to buy one, unless you pick up the old 3 speeds for a bargain price of course!!
I would still pick the BW or C4 over the torque-flite. There's plentiful supply of these and cheap to have rebuilt, although marginally better on-road compared to the Torque-Flite. But in all fairness, the TF was designed for big-block V8's not ****y little Rover jobs!!
Hope this clears this up a bit.

I posted that on Outer Limits a few years back and HSV Rangie put it in the Rover sticky thread section.

    Hopefully is accurate.

Yes it is. The factory fitted T/F auto wasn't introduced til later in '83 and al auto conversion are those two I descrbed til then (unless they had Holden/Ford transplants and anything could be in there ).
