    TD5 Rocker Cover gasket

Oil leak again. Rocker cover gasket AGAIN. Leaking from the 'D' at the rear of the rocker cover again. This will be the fourth time that the gasket will have been replaced since the vehicle was new in 2001. Has anyone got any reliable tips to make sure this doesn't happen again. The gasket goo used by my LR service specialist obviously doesn't work too well.

Is it possible that the rocker cover is being tightened down too hard ? Would this cause the gasket to distort? Is it possible that the crankcase is being overpressured somehow. How do I check operation of the breather valve just upstream of turbo.

    Cheers

Don't know but mine has never leaked. There are groves in some sections and I noticed a lip on other parts of the gasket. Maybe they have been lucky enough to miss one each time?

Mine was fixed twice under warranty. The 2nd time some of that blue sealant was used and seems to have done the job.

I can't see how the bolts can be overtightened as there is a spacer that goes through the gasket at each bolt to prevent overtightening.

I have just rebuilt a TD5 & the VRS gasket set had a different rocker cover gasket to my engine.

The D at the rear was larger on my engine. The new gasket would just cover the D but the locating groves were not in the slots. I had to use the old gasket. So this could be your problem.

when you put the next one in... place a smear of red gasket sealastic on both sides of the gasket and a tiny smear of vasaline around the top of the head (no lumps just dip your finger in and wipe it over) assemble to contact and let it sit for 10-20 mintues (1 beer) then tigheten to correct settings.

Its how I do the rocker gaskets on the 2.25s and the isuzu 3.9s

rocker cover gaskets are normally fitted dry....ie nothing on them....
except for the "D" rubbers.....these need to be sealed with some sort of sealant.....
such as the blue rtv or silastic designed for this....
the oil will find its way between the edge of the rubber and the gasket if you dont seal this.....

take off your rocker cover......if its only been fitted not too long ago it will still be soft....
clean and seal the "D" rubbers with sealant......and clean also the rocker cover gasket and its mating surfaces.....
and refit it.....it should be ok.....

Early Td5's are different to later ones in a few minor areas. This is one.

The torque settings for the cover bolts is 9 Nm (7 lb/ft) which is quite light - so I guess there is a chance of overtightening/distorting

And you should put two 'blobs' of sealant (ST 5433) either side of the "D" as you call it. but don't put too much sealant as there is a risk of blocking the oil drain hole just behind the "D"

just a quick comment about this job and some guides, i just did my d2 easy enough.

    www.discovery2.co.uk / Workshop /Injector Harness

gives good suggestion to remove the passengers side 8mm bolt from rear plastic cover to allow it to be pushed back, i was able to go one further and take the other one out on the drivers side with the open end of 8mm spanner and then remove the cover completely which foam was completely soaked in oil.

another point is that he doesnt replace the grommet/spacers until the cover is back on, but i found (after failing an attempt to use pegs as suggested here: How to change the td5 wiring harness (and rocker cover gasket)) that by putting them in when the cover is off, that they hold the gasket in place firmly enough that it didnt fall off and i got the cover back on first go !

i put my new one back on with no sealant, as the one i took off did have the blue sealant at the rear half D but it looked like it was the problem as it wasnt even and created a gap for the oil by holding the seal away from its surface , the seal taken off was hard too, so i think its just one of those things that needs replacing if/when it goes hard.

if i find its leaking though, ill take it back off and use sealant.
