    200 vs 300tdi

    Hi guys,
Im looking at getting another discovery after I lost my other one to a fallen tree, I remember last time I was looking for one being told that the early model 300tdi were not very reliable and to stick with the 200.
Just wondering what everyone thinks about which engine, and which years were more reliable etc. Pros and Cons?

    Cheers

I read in 4wd monthly that the best discovery drivetrain combination in terms of strength and reliability was the 200Tdi Automatic. I was going to get a 300 Tdi Auto but ended up with a 200Tdi Manual and I havent had any problems now at 295,000kms.

The first fact is that the 200Tdi is the same in torque and power as a 300Tdi. Some will claim the 300 has more power/torque, it doesn't (at least in a Disco). I know that my 200Tdi is a little noisier but once warmed up its all the same. (Have a look at the other link, this is discussed)

I know that I made the right decision with the 200Tdi because it has been a lot cheaper to run than a 300Tdi and is less problematic. Many parts are cheaper, for example a 200Tdi radiator is half the price of the 300 Item for a disco, and the issues with timing belts on the 300 can make timing belt replacment expensive.

I also recall when my alternator bearings decided to die 400kms from Melbourne. The alternator seized, I pulled over, hacked off the belt and continued driving for 400kms! That is not the easiest thing to do in a 300 Tdi and when it comes time to replace the alternator, the 300 unit is more expensive.

Having said that, the 300 is more refined and combined in the Discovery with the far more attractive interior and generally higher level of specification its probably a better choice unless looks dont bother you. If it was a defender the difference between 200 and 300 Tdi engines wouldn't matter that much. (But I think the 200 Defender is detuned compared to the 200 in the Disco)
