Valve clearance 0.010" hot or cold (read warm) - but you knew that.
There is a "rule of 7 (?)" to use. i.e. when number 1 is fully depressed, adjust no. 8 and so on.
Hi guys,
I've just had to replace my head gasket, alls gone well but i am having a bit of trouble with getting the valve clearance (on my 1979 series 3a 4cyl petrol) quite right.
So how do you do it?
all tips and tricks appreciated

Its Rule of 9s..
the valves label 1-8 from front to rear and when one is fully open whatever number adds up to 9 is the one you should be adjusting...
or rule of 5... when the valves of one cylnder are rocking (both just open) then you adjust both valves onwhatever cylnder adds up to 5....
Hot or cold you adjust them to .010 inch...
I adjust mine using an 8 thou feeler under the valve side until its only just got drag on it then hold the adjusting screw with the biggest screwdriver I have then tighten the lock nut without allowing the asdjusting screw to move at all.
when the locknut pulls up on the adjusting screw it will lift it so the back side of the threads remain in firm contact with the rocker... I then check with a 10 thou feeler just to confirm.

In the 'good old days' I can recall watching my father doing them - - with the engine running, from memory there was quite a bit of oil around afterwards, but he always seem to get them spot on.
The mind boggles
Thanks for correcting me mate.Originally Posted by Blknight.aus
yep you can do em on the run by ear... a magnetic screwdriver that is a perfect fit to the slot helps and they dont spill all that much oil. Its also a good way to temporarily decompress a cylinder to aid fault finding
