Symptoms are the same as when I had a fuel blockage. Starving under load. Drained tank into jerry cans through a stocking (not mine, honest), disconnected lines and blew back with a compressor. Clean out sediment filter near back axle. The actual diagnosis was from putting a clear bit of plastic hose from before the lift pump to injector pump. It started to collapse with a few revs.
    Hope it helps,
    Tony

    What a response
Just gone to watch a movie and 2 pages of replies.

The thing is I can't replicate the problem.
After I bought the car I had it at the repairer to get some things fixed. After I picked it up I made it 20KM and had those problems. But that time it was even ideling very bad when it happened. Left the car over night started next morning everything was fine. Drove back to the repairer and they did whatever they did. They did not charge me for anything but I think they replaced one of those black pipes from the lift pump. Since then I was driving 5000 KM without any problems.
Then I had to go from Hobart to Launceston and after 100 KM the car started doing it once. Was driving along with 110 KM/h and all of a sudden the car slowed down. 80/70/60 and then driving fine. After another 50 KM same thing. I turned around and drove back. The car did it once on the way back. Had it at the repairer and they did:
    Check in tank fuel pickup
    clear/check fuel delivery lines
    part dismantle fuel injection pump
    clean/lubricate fuel volume piston

Since I picked up the car it didn't happen (drove around 300KM). But now it's leaking near the injection pump.
I can go up the hill 4th gear full speed, no problems. I just can't reproduce the problem. I'm sure it'll happen again when I get up at 4AM to get to Launceston again or when I have the car full with the kids and the boat at the back.

Also the first time we changed the fuel filter in the back.

    Ha ha,

    That sounds so familiar.

My experience has made me think that the times the problem persisted I either didn't sort the problem out step by step, and so missed something, or in the process of fixing the problem I did something that made it worse - stuffing the lift pump.

Could it be that you need a combination of engine being under full load and on a hill to make it happen?

A leak near the lift pump probably means the lift pump/hoses are done.

A small leak in lift pump might be small enough not to affect performance unless under those kind of combined loads.

Do you have fuel filters in back and in front?

    Cheers
    Simon.

I think there is only one fuel filter in the back. But with this car I thought I spend some money and let the the repairer fix things. Turns out every time I have it there I have to take it back as something is leaking or not working.

I have to go up 2 hills every day and I can do that either 5th gear with around 70-80 or 4th gear at 100km/h and no trouble at all. So I think the engine is getting enough fuel. It must be something intermittent as I drove 5000k without anything then it did it 3 times within 300k and now it seems to be ok again. So I want to start somewhere as I'm sure it's not fixed.

Time for the pinch test then....

get it out there warm it up and on a warm day (in so much as you have down there) squeeze every rubber hose you can get your hands onto..

    check all the nylon lines

if in doubt pull them off one at a time and blow them out gently then apply pressure to them, if they bulge replace.

I did not use Justin Cooper. Did not even know there was someone in Kingston (would only be half way for me) so I get the guy in town to repair his repairs first as I payed him to break things and then I will have a look myself. If I can't find anything at all I think Justin might be the way to go.

Where do you get your hoses from ? Do you buy Landrover parts or just walk in Repco and buy it buy the meter ? I wanted a new rubber hose down from where you fill the power steering but that is 12mm and Repco only had up to 9.5mm but they told me there is an industrial hose place in Hobart.
