Seven Seater Disco 1's - Help Please

Does anyone know if the Disco 1's with the 7 seats were complianced as seven seat capacity?

I have a 98 tdi (5 seater) and have just added the two seats to the back. I am trying to ascertain for the RTA whether these seats were rated as adult seats or just child seats (limited to 40kg). The RTA reckon they are too small and LR were no help.

Does anyone know where I can find this out and prove it to the RTA one way or the other?

Does anyone have an ES7 with a seating capcity of 7 showing on the compliance plate?

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Mine is an SE7 and there is a plate in the engine compartment saying "No. of Seats 7".

... though I have to admit any adult sitting in the back would want to wear a stack hat.

    Seven seater D1

Yep, they are the LR original seats.

Dave, thanks for that. I take it that means they are adult seats (although they would hurt) but the guys at the RTA wanted to call them kids seats only and limit them to 40kgs. I just need to get doco proof now. I might have to photograph a compliance plate if there is nothing else.

You shouldnt need to even notify them, they are a factory option and only bolt in not a modification.

I'm not certain, but I think the problem is that you are changing the seating capacity of the vehicle. If your Disco was originally a 5 seater then I don't think you are allowed to simply add two more seats, even though they were made for the same model. You may have to obtain some kind of certification to show that they are safe. Sorry to be so vague but I'm basing my asumptions on posts from people who's vehicles were defected because they had taken out seats.

Just checked under the bonet of my SE7 and it just states seats 7 no size restrictions. As for riding in the back have done so once from Hendra to Daisy Hill, approx 1/2 hour trip. once was enough how ever the kids fight to get the back seats

If it came from the factory as a 5 seater, then it must stay as a 5 seater as stated on the compliance plate.
The extra 2 seats must be added to the compliance plate which should be easily obtainable if the seats are genuine Land Rover.

When the Disco I was current, we used to fit an extra 1 or 2 seats to the 5 seaters & obtain a new complaince plate straight from Land Rover. That applied on PD or after a year or so. Whether Land Rover can still do this or not, I don't know. They might need to be engineered (in NSW at least).

Chev28 (nice model), I assume you're in NSW as you mention the RTA. If you have a dealer nearby, give them a try first. They should be able to contact LR technical on your behalf in regards to the new complaince plate. The dealer might need to check the fitment of the seats though.

Canberra acutally but similar rules apply.

What is the number for LR technical? The RTA place here reckon they will just update the rego details after inspection (if I can prove it) without changing the compliance plate. Whever makes it legal for them I guess.

Is the inspection being done by the RTA ?
If they're happy to update the rego details without replacing the compliance plate, then that sounds the easiest way. Let your insurance co know too, just in case.

If you have a problem, I can get in touch with LR & see what they can do. It's been years since we've replaced a compliance plate for 6/7 seats so I don't know if they can still do them.
