The output shaft is the same from Series One to Series Three. It is the intermediate shaft you are thinking of that changed between S2 and S2a (actually from Gearbox suffix B, which was approximately then) as did the intermediate and low gears.

The input shafts were also different, as they ran different seals on the earlier boxes. If you would like one of the earlier type, try Spares Galore in Ferntree gully (VIC). I was after the latter type a couple of years ago, but they had several early types still wax sealed from the factory at very cheap prices.

from memory the easy way to tell is to look at the idler gear carrier shaft, The II is quite small in comparison with a IIa/III

Hi land lord, Thats mine you bought, you got a bargain. (if you want to upgrade to a series 3 case - I'll throw in an intermediate shaft, case & good intermediate gear. (for a six pack)

    Thanks boys!

Really appreciate your help - once again - it is really comforting to know You are out there offereing your assistance. In fact I woudl not continue my re-build if I could not access you guys!

Crossy - I already have the S2a (i think) - I have to confirm this.
Put your S3 case on ice until I confirm if I have the s2a case - as I really want to be sure I have the s2a case and not the s2 case. Money will be posted in your accoutn tomorrow morning with postal details to follow..

Easy to tell - intermediate shaft is 1 5/8" (vs 1 1/8") on the S2a box.

    JOhn,

Just how easy is it to measure the intermediate shaft?

And, what end points are you measuring?

    Will access be a problem?

since part of the shaft sticks out the back of the case and is held in by a small plate... measure that part of the shaft for diameter.

    how easy is that?

cant do that with a toymota...
