    I did a f100 gearbox conversion, couldn't be stuffed fitting a seal on the adapter plate so have run a balance tube between the transfer case and gearbox. (the seals never work anyway).

    S2 = 1 1/8" 29mm

    Crossy's picture shows it pretty well. If you get under the car, behind the transfer case, and look forward you will see the rear prop shaft coming out of the centre of the handbrake drum. Just to the left of this you should see the speedo cable going out and to the left. More or less under the cable and just beyond the edge of the drum the idler shaft sticks about a quarter of an inch out of the box. There is a small tab going into a groove in the shaft (secured by a stud) that prevents it from turning or coming out. This is the shaft you need to measure.

    Hope this helps

    Can't find any pictures that show it, and I'm not going out to the shed at this hour!

    It is extremely unlikely that you have a different box. Look at the rear of the transfer case. At the lower right of it is the output shaft with the handbrake drum. At the top left is the circular cover where the PTO or overdrive is fitted. In line and about halfway between these there is the intermediate shaft protruding only about 5mm from the back. It is secured by a small tab held by a stud. Assuming the brake drum is still fitted, it is partly behind this, which may be why you can't see it, but it should be clearly visible if looked at from a viewpoint a little to the left.
