Donk ?????
Sorry to be a pain, but I've got a problem. Disco 1 93 V8 auto
On Saturday afternoon, I was on the beach at Lennox Head. I was parked for an hour and a half; loaded the kids, idled it up for about 2 minutes....
into reverse and a not to hard climb over a dune. High range CDL first gear, straight up (easy) for about 100 yards (metres).... having easily done this, motor was running at about 2500rpm, and back on the easy stuff, there was an odour.......
all the way home, about 20ks.......
I had a look underneath just now 9.30pm Mon, (during the week it, the D1, does not much), but a quick 20k trip smelt the same.
Underneath, the twin right hand side exhaust pipes are caked in thick oil, besie about where the donk fits the bell housing....
I cant see a leak yet, as the whole shebang is coated in road grime and oily sand - but i've been cleaning it off with the high pressure hose
I'm assuming the smell is heavy oil burning on the exhaust. Parked for the last two days - underneath there are blackspots of oil on the driveway - so I don't yet suspect the auto trans - and having removed and inspected the auto dipstick the oil in there appears unburned - good as new.....
so, heavy oil, maybe from the transfer case - or the back of the donk - I've stressed a seal and it's now leaking - any thoughts, wise AULRO minds?
Thanks for your help, GQ

black oil is typically engine oil...
if you can smell it burning its cause its on the exhaust the heat will make it thicker, only places I can think of it coming from are (starting from the top down) rocker cover, head gasket, feeder lines (if fitted) pressure gauges the sump gasket could also do it if the oil is migrating...
put a white sheet under the car then confirm the colour of the stain to the colour of the oils in the various components.

Oil cooler lines/pipes - if there is one on your model
Way back when, Ladas.. (Thanks, zook and yes i have missed you). There was a bumper sticker which said "Don't honk, new donk"
Usually on the back of old EH holdens with a new 'donk'.
My prob will be further reported tomorrow, further to your (youse) help and thanks so far, guys.
There's oil everywhere... grrrrrrr!
And slowly dripping from somewhere I can't see, but about the consistency (viscosity) of engine oil.
What bugs me about this is that the strain (off the beach) was minor....
Buggers up the idea about LRs not leaking....
Still, I've had worse, the old Transit van (250ci Ford six auto) leaked like a sieve.
(My Dad reckons B29s were suspect if they didn't leak).

Most Ford Transits I know came with a useful accessory -
oil drip tray,
bit like Triumph and BSA motorcycles
I'm fair dinkum worried about you Ladas, who do you know about all these things I've owned in a past life or two? LOL....
In a few short lines you've pinged other things in my past collection....
The best leaker around here is the Harley Davidson X90!
(or the Mercury 85 on the back of the boat)....
Dad used to have a B29 which leaked profusely....
