    Alternator

My '93 Disco I needs the alternator re-built. What are the repair costs like? My mechanic has the car at the moment and I just want to get an idea of what I may be up for.

Also, would this likely be the cause of the tacho not working sometimes then jumping around? Problem with voltage caused by alternator?

is it a diesel or petrol and yes it could affect your tacho as they run off the alternator

It is petrol. I put it in for a service as it was starting to struggle then have a surge when you put the foot down. Even with cruising there was a drop in power then a surge repeating over and over. Not sure if this is related also.

I originally thought it may be a block in the fuel filter or maybe a block in the injectors. So far the alternator has definitely been identified as needing a re-build so maybe this may have caused a problem with the engine management system also.

A worst case senario for a rebuilt should not be more than about $200 in parts and thats assuming the guy who does it knows what hes doing.

The sum total of parts can be more than that but by the time you get to needing to spend that much money on it the parts and labour costs will generally be more than the cost of a new alternator.

more likely it will be a bearings brushes and maybe rectifier replacement in which case Id expect not more than $100 for parts and maybe an hours labour

Some rectifiers etc for these marelli alternators can be around $120 on their own, so I would want a quote first. I've been fitting new ones lately because of the price difference to a FULL reco.
