    which roof racks for defender???

    Hi all,

I'm looking to get some good solid roof racks fror my 2001 defender. I'm not interested in one of those expedition racks, just a lightweight low profile rack system to tie on surfboards. I don't want them sitting 6 inches off the rooftop - nice and low is the go.

any suggestions on what brand, where to get and most importantly how much?? or alternatively someone in southeast queensland (Goldy) who can fabricate racks.

    Cheers
    Jimmy

    Rhinos

I picked up some Rhino racks. Just two bars for the kayak. They sit lower than any other bars i could find and are specifically made for defenders.

they are definately tough as i found out when the other half didn't roll the roller door all the way up and i ripped it out of its mounts. the racks just slid along the rails and took some paint off, still A okay.

picked them up at ARB but they are everywhere. (and you can get a basket if you need it)

Or depending on how urgent you want one there is a member here on the coast who is about to make about 10 defender racks in january which are a very slimline version including a small basket at the front which can protect a couple spotlights.

I must admit that sounds interesting. Although I think I'm still waiting on sidesteps from the same gent I think and getting nervous (??)

I'm working on having all this stuff fitted by about March at the latest so I don't end up frantic like last time! We should be heading off in early June.

I'd pretty much decided on rino racks and a rhino basket because of the flexibilty. i.e you can always take the basket off and just have the racks if you need to carry something long.

I have three ProRack bars on mine, with about a finger thickness clearance off the roof, powder coated, and fitted like they were meant to be there. Got them from Supercheap. I carry three 2.4m x 1.0m trestle tables on them.

    Try Mountain Top Experience

I had a rack built by these guys. Sits approx 45mm above roof, this includes the square steel that it is made from. It has removalable sides, the rack is 1800mm long and has a spare wheel plate complete with removeable studs.
    It's galvanised inside and out.
You barely notice it on the roof, and no wind noise Cost of rack $750.00.
Also had a hinged ladder fabricated at the same time...... $200.00

I can post some photos if required
