    Lighter wheels for 130?

    Hi all,

Can anyone suggest please some after market wheels to fit a 130 Defender that are rated to the same load rating as standard but don't weigh so much? The standard wheels and tyres weigh in at 37kgs each, so with 2 spares there could be quite a bit of weight to be saved.

I have some 15 x 7 rims with 11.5 inch tyres that only weigh 29kgs each, but I want to return to standard tyre size.

    Thanks and cheers all,

    Paul

I would have thought that the standard 130 rims were a good compromise between weight and strength. I doubt you could find a lighter (16" steel) rim that was still strong enough for a 130.

Which wheels do you have now?

I reckon you'd have the wolf/wholf rims with the snazzy holes around the outside. They're quite heavy.

Older 130s have steel wheels still heavier weight than standard Defender rims, but not quite as heavy as wolf/wholf.

I have an older - '96 - 130 with the 16x6 steel wheels, and lucky for you I'd be happy to swap for a set of wolf rims.

    Cheers

I forgot about the Wolf rims being thicker - they are almost as heavy as a (S1) disco rim. 110 rims are very light, but they MAY be a bit marginal on a 130... That said, they seem to hold up fine on isuzu-engined 110's...

As I understand it, you can't put std 110 wheels on a 130 Defender and be covered by insurance as they don't have a high enough load rating. Not sure if this is applicable to you.

Interesting... There will always be the odd failure of anything - I have never heard of that happening before. And AFAIK the military use std county rims on all perenties... Anyone else???

But that said, I am happy with my (heavy) disco 1 wheels.

Regardless of the weight of them, I was under the impression that Disco 1 steel wheels were not rated for the load of a 110, let alone a 130. Can anyone confirm (or deny) this?

The army don't use standard 5.5 x 16 110 rims, would need to look it up but more like 7 x 16 rims.

I seriously douby it. A 110 and a S1 disco are pretty similar in weight, and the disco wheels are much heavier construction than a 110 wheel. I have run D1 rims on my 110 for years, and know plenty of others who use them on 110s and 130s. I will see if I can see a load rating stamped on them when I get home.

rar110 - I owned some perentie (4x4) rims for a while and they were definitely no wider than 6x16 (they always had tyres on them so never measured. They looked like normal 110 rims. You also cannot fit a 7.50x16 to a 7x16 rim.
