    V8 starter motors

ive been having a bit of a problem with the starter motor in my 95 3.9 v8 motor. initially it started to refuse to work without belting it with a hammer, it now seems to be working but i can hear the pinion gear running on after start .

it may be that its sticky or a spring is cactus or even lost a tooth. (i hope it isnt a missing tooth or 2 on the ring gear ) so in the event i find its not repairable , does anyone know if all the starter motors , for 3.5 and 3.9 V8's any model defender, rangie , disco are all interchangeable or not ?

ive also read that prestolite make on that fits for about 220 ish, but not sure who sells them...........any comments on either issues?

if you have been through deep water, then service the starter - they don't like swimming

    hi thanks for the input.

i probably misled when i said "pinion gear running on"............sounds more like it not withdrawing and itsclipping the ring gear"..

id pull it out myself but that top allen screw is a pig to get too and im losing the strength in my hands and they cramp up (all limbs actually) due to a rather nasty illness , so getting another 4x4 and escapes up the beach is a sort of last hurrah for me while i can still drive .
these bugs are interfering with my plans...lol

That would explain why I've killed 1 and the second is on its way out. Surely there has to be a way to water proof them

geeze i just had another look at it . how to you get to it ..pull out the drive shaft , the heat shield and the exhaust system?

the fact that anyone has ever got one out is a miracle in itself.

    G'Day

Another reason for starters running on is the key not returning on its spring fast enough, as well as all the reasons mentioned before. I have this problem at the moment. flick the key back after the starters engaged see if that stops it ruining on.

thanks for the info and the tips PLR, and your kind offer if you were closer . ive had another look and its just too difficult for me . i also need the tuning done as my fuel consumption is horrid , i estimate about 3.3 k to the litre atm , so something aint right .

ive spoken to Harry at MR automotive at redcliffe and hes booked me in for a look at it for next tuesday . so hopefully all things will be resolved , they will have it down pat on the starter motor thingy i would reckon.

should be a nice drive down the highway at 7 in the morning , traffic withstanding..

thanks to all for the input...

    rangie starter motor.

Hi mudguts, if you are on the sunshine coast, talk to Glen O'shea an auto electrician familiar with landrover products. [he is a member of the local landrover owners club] you can get him on 0408061798. replaced my starter a few months ago.

Tell you what, the old Lucas starter in my old Rangie was bloody strong. It would move the car out of a 10m long water crossing (up to the sill) no worries (Engine died...wouldnt restart). Starter still works fine.

The bosch in the current Rangie wouldnt have a show in hell doing that.
