    Ever had a rattle...?

As a lot of members are aware, rattles often don't come from the place you think they are coming from.
In case anyone else's Defender has the same elusive rattle, I might be able to save someone else being driven crazy by a persistent rattle from the dash.
After hundreds of kilometres of trying to find the source of a fairly loud, dull rattle which I was utterly convinced came from the dashboard, I accidentally discovered that wasn't the source at all.
I found that if the driver's side vent was open all the way, it fluttered in the wind and produced a rattling sound. If I closed it just one notch, the noise stopped.
Of course I realise that everyone who has driven a Defender on a hot day may have worked that out for themselves. On the other hand it may be that my Defender is the only one in existence with exactly the right amount of play in the vent hinge to produce that phenomenon.

My car phone speaker on my D2 has worked itself loose and created a similar squeaking rattle. It took me the good part of a week to discover the source. At first I thought I'd done a shock (but the car drives normally) then I looked towards the dashboard, it's a bit hard to discover the source whilst driving alone. Eventually I found it and with a quick tighten with a screwdriver the rattle was gone. I'm thinking of loosening it again, just to make the D2 sound like a real Land Rover.

I spent a week carefully shifting all the bits and pieces in the glovebox of the S2a looking for the occasional musical tinkle without success (thought I had found it when I found the dollar coin). Then the water pump started to make a horrible noise and I replaced it - the musical tinkle has gone, and I have since found I can get just the same note by gently tapping a fan blade!

    Thumbs down

Funny this was mentioned, I have a rattle around the driver side somewhere, it only happens on a bumpy road at highway speeds.

    **Land Rover Service**
I noticed while looking through the service records that the previous owner had complained after a year of a squeek in the dash. LR response was "Dash board checked, leather conditioner applied to the dash board".

A year later I have the car and notice the same squeek, I pulled down and pushed up on the steering wheel and noticed it was the steering column that is loose somewhere. I've had dashes out before and I won't be doing it again.
