    what mapping and why....

    Hi Guys...

just a quick question or 2!... again!

im about to get my DII td5 ecu upgraded (by tombraider) and was wondering, as there are a few mappings available, regardless of where you got the upgrade done, what mappings did you decide on and why? (ie 140kw / 440nm) im just trying to get a feel for which mapping i should go with.. i dont tow that much but i do tend to drive pretty hard (used to smaller faster motors!) and have to say i am impressed with the handling of such a cumbersome beast!

anyway your replies would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

    Steve

I don't know about this but I'd suggest asking Toomraider himself He'll know what he can and can't do.

well this is why im asking... i spoke to mike yesterday and discussed a few options.. so basically im trying to find out what other people went for and what their reasons were for that.

ie 140/420 for reasonable performance and good towing ability. or 200 / ??? so you can smoke the tires in all gears.. etc etc...

its just to try and see where most people place themselves and why... i guess im just a nosey bugger.. :O) im leaning toward a more powerful upgrade ie 155 / 490 to give me a bit more oomph.. however i may just go with the basic and wait for the higher spec for when i do the intercooler. that way i have less chance of the manifold studs going.

anyway.. any information would be appreciated..

    Thanks

Me i went up in tyre size and together with towing a block of flats when we go touring i went for the big one from B Davis, trouble with this was smoke (ya don't get a nickname sootie for nothing) so back to BD for the mild one, well no smoke but way down on power, so back for the just below big and just above mild.

Now is pretty good, blows abit of smoke but not to bad and power is OK, i'd really like that big re-map back cause when i had the camper on coming home from vic on one trip, never got out of 5th for most of the trip and even overtook a TD cruiser going uphill didn't make him look.

Go with the one Mike suggest cause you'll find that that he's probably tested it so as to get the best power to fuel economy ratio and least amount of smoke.

Besides 140Kw and 440Nm is bloody good power were talking RRS figures here

I have Mike's mild version but also have his bigger IC. I haven't towed with it yet, although I have previously towed close to 2T in std form.
The dramatic improvement in power whilst going uphill, or zapping past another vehicle, still makes me a bit nervous about the longevity of the engine and drivetrain, but it doesn't stop me sticking the boot in when I feel the need. I can't imagine wanting my TD5 to produce any more power.

Its not the same feel as my son's Saab Aero was with its original 170kw, let alone now it's over 200kw, but then sticking the boot into that rather scares me.

I have the 140kw version and am wrapped with it. Still need to see what it's like with 265/75's though.

First fill up showed worse consumption (but I think that was because I was sinking the boot in).

the Td5 doesnt suffer the turbo lag the saab has........nor do you need to wait till 2500rpm till the turbo kicks in......
i change gears at 2300 rpm......

im not sure if i trust myself with any more power in lurch......

Hi all, I was wondering about the R380 gearbox, there rated to 380nm apparently, however you guys are talking well in excess of that, 440nm and above. What does this do to the longevity of the box can it handle the increased power. I'm not trying to knock the chipping cause thats an awsome result i was just thinking about all that extra stress on the gearbox. If your out in the middle of nowhere and it blows up cause it can't take it anymore?
Like i said not knocking the chipping just curious( only have a TDI myself) as i would like to get a bit more go in my vehicle to.

I have not changed my driving style since chipping my vehicle and therefore doubt whether I putting more stresses on the gearbox. I got mine chipped to get more go, have less gear changes (in the auto box) and have better overtaking power at 100kmh.

Others have been running chipped td5's for over 5 years now and have had no issues.

This 1995 Saab has a 3 inch exhaust that with std ecu would come on boost by 1500, but now with upgraded ecu it starts at 1000 with std max boost but at 2500 it allows a lot more boost. But it has always had beautiful throttle response right off idle in contrast with both the TD5s I've owned, even compared with Tombraider's upgrade. The Saab is very nice, but too much acceleration, I fear. Fortunately it has traction control, but it can be switched off.
