Angry Def Trans case oil leak thru breather hose??

    HELP ME!!!!!!!

im losing my mind with landys, i thought i would do the right thing and replace all the oils/filters on the new beastie.....

i did all the right things, even asked you guys about types of oil ect

so now the problem(s), i seem to have need a inordinate amount of transfer case oil (castrol LSX 90) like the 2.6 liters the wshop manual stated, but i ended up topping it up with the rest.....of a 4 lt tub...

it gets better, on a drive last weekend (220kms), it was pumping oil out of, what i think was a breather hose??? behind the engine, running down the firewall, and bell hosing, and spraying back over the rest of the running gear....

I ended up TOPPING IT UP with about a liter of same oil on the way back

    the method
undo the fill point and topped it up until oil started to drain out, left it until it was not running out anymore, silicone on the thread and replaced it

The thing that confuses me, is, why would the be pressure in the box be pumping it out?, and if i topped it up to th fill point, how could there be too much ?(the only thing i can think of)

help me before i drive this thing into a creek, and get landcruiser

theres no way you can put 4 litres of oil in the transfer case through the filler hole. some how you must have removed the wrong bolt to fill it. the filler plug is on the back of the transfer case behind the handbrake drum. with 4 litres in it it will overflow out of the breather hose when hot, and probably past the rear seal behind the handbrake shoes. you need to find the filler/level plug and drain out the excess oil before it buggers the rear seal.

I honestly don't think the transfer case can physically hold 4 ltrs of oil.

There really must be a logical explanation

What model Land Rover and, therefore which Transfer Case are we talking about here?

A friend had a RR Classic 1983 with the LT 95 gearbox and attached transfer case, which upon trying to check oil level in gearbox at [correct] level plug had about 3 litres of gear oil come out before leaving the correct 2.5 approx still inside.......turned out that using incorrect oil [80/90 Gear Oil] instead of correct lubricant [Engine Oil, say 15W/30] caused failure of seal between the two boxes to fail and TX pumped its oil into the overfull gearbox!

But in your case.......ummmm, I'm sure somebody here will have some ideas!

yeah the Tcase can hold 4l just..

and then it will procced to eject it as it warms up, out of the breather if your lucky, seals if your not.

Im backing Jimbo on his thoughts of youve undone the wrong bolt...

in another thread somewhere theres a pic of a series tcase with a red base, it shows the idler shaft and you can just make out the correct fill/check bolt..

they are normally one of two types, both are square drive one is a female type the other is male... IF you have removed a hex head bolt/nut to get to the filler you're on the wrong one.

Transfer cases are not L 77. Manual gearboxes are LT77 or LT77S.
Transfer cases hold about 1.7 litres.
