Heath Robinson would be proud. I think.

This is a copy/paste of an E-mail I sent to David Jones of EngineSaver Alarm. The Discoverys seem to have a high spot in the return hose just where you fit the EngineSaver & no amount of purging seemed to get rid of an air bubble which seemed to collect there.

    Enter Heath Robinson.........
    Hello David.

I thought you may be interested in a simple gadget I knocked up this morning to help get rid of an air bubble that has plagued me even since I contacted you a few weeks ago, & existed after I fitted the alarm.

I followed your instructions as best I could, but could not shift all the air & I was getting the extended beeeeps each time & wasting coolant whilst trying. Thought, there needs to be a better way.

The Discovery has a 1/2" BSP Rad. vent plug on the driver's side & even putting this in a higher position, still could not get all out. Blocked it up even higher today.
Using a 1/2" BSP pipe nipple I clamped the neck of the 3 litre bottle over it after cutting the bottom out of it.

I was then able to rev the engine as much & for as long as I liked without losing any coolant, while watching through the bottle for air bubbles. Didn't lose a drop. :-D It just expanded into it as a surge chamber.

To remove the "Tool" I simply switched the engine off & by slowly opening the overflow bottle cap slowly dropped the level in the "tool" until it was 2" high. Quickly removing the 1/2" nipple I refitted the radiator vent plug.

    Job done.

This may work on other vehicles, but it certainly does on the Discovery if one has the top vent plug.

I trust this may be of interest to you. Obviously, it could be done better if one was inclined & did a few.

David thought he'd seen a similar 'bodge' on this forum but suggested I post it anyway.

Heath Robinson was a genius and we can see him every day - in Wallace and Grommet - I think he may have had a hand in designing my old Triumph2500PI.....

Used that method of the Defender to remove air bubbles but I had it on the expansion tank.

Hey Des, what's that shifter doing sitting on the scuttle. You wouldn't have used that to undo/do up the plug, would you ??

Good bit of lateral thinking, BTW.

Edd, maybe that's what David was referring to.

Rick, mate. 1/2" BSP nipple is a hex, therefore one needs a shifter to lightly screw it in a bit. Not much, just a bit.

Nooooo, to remove the slotted brass plug, one used the correct tool.

A Mill Saw file on edge. Also partly in shot.
