    186 Holden Engine ID

    Hi.

    My Red 186 has serieal number starting 7437...

    Q1 - Specs?
    Q2 - Year?
    Q3 - L or H compression?

    Yes, I have checked out Mustang Sally's page - without luck..

    Contact GM-H service records. Used to be in Salmon St. Port Melbourne. Give them thewhole engine no. I think it will be an early one. The 'phone book should find them, www.whitepages.com.au

    G'day All, Mustang Sally and Terri-ann Wakeman's sites do have usefull info in them if you are new to the Land Rover scene but if looking for something in particular pecuilar to Oz you are wasting your time as they are situated in the USA from memory cheers Dennis
    PS Yes it was.
    PPS Repco should be able to tell you but the problem is we dont know what state of Oz you are in so maybe you need to update your profile as been suggested by others.
    PPSS my apologies as I see that you have updated your profile, but Repco is still an Oz wide supplier of parts, that's where I would start.

    is that all the number on the engine?
    a rough rule to use is the first 2 digits are close to the year produced.
    sounds like its a repco gem number to me.
    it should be 186pxxxx, 186hpxxxx something like that.
    for the 202 its more likely to be QLxxxx
    black 202's are VLxxxxx

    as for high compression or not, thats up to the head on it. somewhere on the pass side of the head close to where the tappet cover sits there will be a H or L cast into the head. high compression heads arnt as common as the low comp heads.

    i used to know a hell of alot more about the engine numbers, but i have forgotten over time.

    Yes, Holden engine numbers had a prefix, but I no longer remember what they were. 186 & a letter; C, or J, or Q followed by another letter; 149's were H followed by the number. If they had an R suffix it meant "repeat", the stamper person had put the number on two engines.

    thats right JP stamped blocks were GTR XU1 motors, though i think you would know if you had one of those in a series landy. BP would be following you with a tanker

    JP was the prefix on 202/3300 engines fitted to Series LJ Toranas Model 82911 GTR fitted with production option XU1. My memory of this is that it indicated a block cast of a higher duty iron. GTR's with XU1 driven normally did around 24-28mpg. Little worse than a Torana of lesser performance. LC Gtr/XU1 engines were prefixed 3100X. At GM-H we never regarded an XU1 as a separate model, but as a limited production run of GTR's fitted with special equipment.

    I have 2 red motors in the garage.

    One has "HP" stamped in very large letters on one and the other 186 has "186" stmaped on it in very large letters.

    Cansomeone please explain what the HP signifies..?

    Both start with 74 in their seiral number however...

    Pros and Cons or L/H compression - which is better?

    from my memory the HP on the block stood for high perfomance i could be wrong

    i remember all the holden suckers when i was young wanted a HP block i did hear they had realy good cranks in them

    and from memory the HP blocks were from the HD model

    Sounds encouraging - thanks rangieman.

    The letters "HP" seems to take the place of "186" would be stamped..

    No "186" stamped can be seen - in big letters anyway..

    Any one else have the good oil on the "HP" 186 blocks?
