    179HP vs 186 for Series 1 SWB

    Hi Team.

I want to know what you think you know about the 179HP holden engine and it's suitability for the 86" SWB.

Here is a juicy link to wet your appetite..

My particular 179HP is M - prefix and it's specs are in below link (as per 186)

Does the HP have the steel crank or not?
Does the 186P have the steel crank or not?

    THanks

I think 179HP has a steel crank as has the 186S motor ( i have one in an fc sedan). Not much difference between the two except for the 186S had 2 piece cast iron headers and a 2 barrel stromberg WW carb.
Either would be good in a landy.

If I had my "rathers".....I'd most rather have an EFI Black motor!!!!.......but either of your choices are both good......179 has it's torque peak a bit lower down......but in a Series [unless you change final diff ratios or ratio in High in transfer case] the Holden motors rev really high!!......my S2a with a 186 is screaming! at 90k's [it's top speed is a bit over 100k's - and it's just too painful to feel the motor screaming out, almost in pain for very long!......but it's great off road!...........no probs as far as power goes though.....so choose best condition motor of the 2!

    Thanks Byron.

Does the 186 have the steel crank?

I am thinking of doing the Transfer Case conversion...

How can I tell condition of motor wihtout starting it - as both as sort of on their own at moment..
