    Cruise control, pad or stalk

I am going to put a Command cruise control in the Deafender.

Where do you stick the stalk or did you go for a pad control?

    see the options here

I went the control pad way, the stalk was just tooo ugly to use.

It's on the wifes ford falcon and sits on the centre consul behind the handbrake etc.,

Quite a neat (and easy installation) nothing too hard - the fitting of the sensor on the prop shaft was a bit fiddly - but has been there for nearly 5 years and has never cause a problem.

Photo's could be supplied if required

See attached picture. Has worked faultlessly for about ten years, with the only problem being when the untidy wiring to the prop shaft pickup (on the front prop shaft above the crossmember) caught on the grease nipple................

While I don't have a Defender, I would go for the pad over the stalk.
I've fitted 5 of the pad type & 1 of the stalk type. The stalk feels very weak/flimsy compared to the pad.

BTW, are you buying from that link you posted ?
K-Mart are cheaper, especially on a 20/25% off day.

I think the pad makes for a more discreet and neater finish, but having used the stalk type (Mercedes Sprinter) at work, I think the stalks offer some advantages. You can use the stalk to gently decelerate or accelerate, while not being distracted by reaching beyond the steering wheel. I've got the pad type on the Defender, but could be tempted to fit a stalk next time, if it culd be made to look neat.

For the guys with defenders: where did you end up placing the sensor where it wasnt going to end up being knocked off when off road?
    Thanks

There's an aftermarket stalk type on mine, which works when it feels like it and that's not too often....

actually there's all sorts of aftermarket stuff hiding in there - really should do something with all this crap - i removed something that looked like a transmitter a while ago - a hidden box with no controls - then there's that thing which bumps into me left knee - some sort of brake adjuster modulator thing for trailers i think......

I fitted the AP60 to the Disco, Pad mount. Often the stalks work loose over time and end up damaging the wires. (Although there are ways to fix that happening!)

If you look along your prop shafts (preferably mount as close to the transfer case as possible, minimal up & down movement by the shaft helps prevent dropouts) If you mount it to the side in roughly the middle of prop shaft she'll be apples!

Depending on the kit you can use 1 magnet. Pays to make sure you secure the magnet with wire and also a good adhesive

On the front prop shaft above the cross member just in front of the U-joint at the T/C. It is pretty well protected here. The pickup is actually on a bracket to the side of the shaft and held by one of the crossmember bolts. Been there for ten years now and has come to no grief off road, and the only grief on road was when the wire to it came loose and caught on the U-joint.
