I assume its a 200 or 300Tdi? They might have the injector pump out a tooth, don't really know how it could have been done as the injector pump is supposed to be locked with a pin, but I have seen it done before.
hi decided to have timing belt done at a non land rover mechanic . i thought they would be fairly simple . got car back ,running at about 65 % of power . told them to fix it of course . just wondering where they would have got it all wrong . hope they can fix it or i will have to go back to my regular mechanic and say i will never stray again . thanks

its a 300 tdi
im tipping slipped the belt timing one or teeth by incorrect installation procedure on the belt. the valves will be dropping combustion pressure and injection will be out..
its bloody easy to do, especially if you dont turn the engine over by hand for 2 full revolutions of the elastic band.
Its typically becuase when they install it the slack is on the wrong side of the pullies and letting the tensioner go then starting it moves the pullies in relation to each other.
skipping a 30 second step winds up costing you a complete do over of the job ... learnt the hard way

I think they may have just done it like a petrol and skipped the pin and loosening the bolts on injection pump pulley or had the flywheel turn during process.
I found that i needed to use the crankshaft front bolt to help slip the belt over the idler and tensioner. But I did have pin in and did then rotate and check the timing twice before being happy it was spot on.
I do have the timing tools kit here and a collection of home brew extras to make the job easier.
Good luck getting it fixed.

I'd take it back to the mechanic that did the job and give him some instructions to do it correctly... forget paying twice. You don't need a L/R specialist - its not rocket science, just a half assed job.
good luck![]()
I've had soooo many simple jobs on LR's stuffed up by mechanics that don't know the cars!!! Similar stuff to like you've had happen!Originally Posted by mns488

Bugger, they messed it up! You will have to redo the job (I wouldn't trust them to get it right next time), so look up another mechanic or try doing it yourself. Here is how to do it:

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.
Dont get me wrong, when i said it winds up costing you a do-over I was talking from a mechanics perspective... not the customers...
Its a warrenty fix, providing it is actually the belt out of whack and thats easy to prove (generally) by checking the injection timing with a DTI.
And I dont understand why theres this fixation that rovers are hard to work on by mechanics... Theyre a shedload easier than most other cars its been my misfortune to get involved with (maybe not quite so with the v8s and anything post 2000ish). And one of my many pet hates are mechanics who will gladly take the vehicle in to work on it, get something wrong and then blame the fact that its a landrover and its hard to work on.
Its not like its powered by a warp field induction coil coupled to a dilithium fusion matrix forcing antimatter field variations through a flux capacitor to warp the fabric of time and space around the vehicle allowing the vehicle to stay still and the universe move around it and all other landrovers while still maintaining normal Einsinian time space physics for our relative perpsectives. Dig deep enough and theres still pistons doing the up down thing and cranks doing the roundy roundy thing and that technologys been around since, (insert the date that the first pumping engine was first started) (ok SWMBO was watching star trek and 7/9 an b'lana were having an argument hmmmmmmmm 7/9 and b'lana)
Replacing the timing belt is relatively easy unless your deliberately messing with valve timing but IF youre not confident to do it yourself take the vehicle back and get it fixed properly or have them pay someone to do it properly.
(edit +20mins)
Just got that howto to load... Thats a bloody good how to.... although I prefer to pull the injectors instead of the plugs for 2 reasons
1. you can inspect them and have them sent off for a bloody good cleaning and servicing
2. it relieves the pressure on some of the pumping components in the injector pump and makes aligning it easier.
Yes it generally means a rebleed and a new set of seals for the injectors but its worth it as the injectors are about the best indicators for fuel/combustion problems and good injection is really important to a diesel

thanks for all the good input. mechanics who did the job were very co operative as soon as they realized that they stuffed up . admitted liability straight away . offered me a loan car . so i will go back on monday and a 10 second drive will tell me if they have fixed the problem . if its not 100%i will get them to pay for land rover to fix it . i have a good land rover mechanic and will stick to them in future . i was just been a bit lazy seen this mechanic was just around the corner . i should have known better . whether it be 4x4 or fishing or camping any laziness usually comes back to bite me .
