    K&N filters

Online purchase of K&N air filter for Disco Td5 has left me with the wrong size, no 332737 as indicated by their website is 20mm longer ( correct width of 205mm). I think their website is wrong as the Defender Td5 is a different part no.--332788, but arent they the same motor? I havent been able to get in touch with the supplier as yet so any advice please.

Now why on earth did you go and do such a silly and pricy mistake for????.......I mean get ANY sort of K+N filter......I'm assuming you don't run the car on a racetrack ONLY!

Do a topics search on K+N filters on here......also check out some of the other product testing websites [I'll try and post some relevant links up shortly!]

I've run an K&N filter in my Rangie(s) for 6 years without any issues. I still have the one element and swappeed it over from one Rangie to the other

Saying that, they do need to be cleaned reguarly and I do after most 4WD trips, which is a dead set PIA and why I wouldn't buy another one. I paid $90 for mine back in 2000 but they have jumped up in price since.

Dont drag this old one out.

Mine gets better economy, more acceleration and never had an oil issue nor dust in inlet tract since fitting it.

Ran out of fluid 3 months ago, threw in a genuine paper... Economy dropped, acceleration sufferred....

Got fluid, cleaned and properly oiled it and back in... Guess what, feels better already!

Oil analysis shows no detrimental contaminants...

I'll bet good money POOR maintenance and improper oiling are the key causes of issues...

And yes, to answer original question... Defender and Disco TD5 use same filter.

These things require very regular maintenance.

    if you have the time,,
    and need a few HP,,

    no problems.

HP isnt my thing... Flow is....
Time to clean... Well remove, spray, coffee.....
    Rinse.... Smoke....
Dry time... 20 minutes (I do other stuff)
    Spray and refit... 10 minutes...

Mine gets cleaned 'normally' on its oil change etc... so 10,000km intervals + unless I did some really funky dust driving....

Once, In a moment of slackness on my part, the filter went 20,000km+ with no ill effects, no dust bypass etc....

Induction noise??? Only hear the turbo spool, thats all.... Paper or K&N

That must be the asthmatic V8 gasping for the air to keep up with all the petrol its guzzling

i bet your spot on there mike!
you cant own a 4x4 and not do regular maintance!

i to have no problems with washable filters, cant speak for k&n, i run uni filter. have done in all my cars for the last 10 years.

as for ease of maintance, uni filter atmo are selling kits for 4x4's. i got mine 3 months ago. comes with spare elements and all the washing/oiling stuff and a bucket and gloves so you can clean later... also run the sock type pre filter in the snorkle top if you have one. these come in packs of 3. 1 in the car, 1 in the glovebox and 1 at home

    cheers phil

I have one now inside a custom airbox, which sits where the washerbottle used to be. The air comes in from the snorkel straight into it, then a gradual elbow into the turbo inlet. The airbox mod made a great improvement in air flow and the turbo spool uop whistle is soooo nice I now tend to drive around with the passenger window down.....Custom fabrication ( Chris Tanner) in Hobart made mine, and also did all my exhaust and stainless intercooler plumbing. (Loooks like a skyline now under the bonnet..) He also recommends KN and runs them on his Lexus powered GQ chassis Hilux.

I haven't done 10,000km yet, and it looks good even after a few off road trips.

mmmmmm, well thats been somewhat enlightening, some knowledgeable stuff on filtration in the links though some didnt "link".
I couldnt find the specs on paper filtration to compare to the K&Ns. On looking at the K&N you can actually see through it (just) as it is a lot thinner (less surface area) so must give better flow, well thats good but its the questions raised on actually stopping the finer particles. Only one person gave a personal experience of finding some fine dust in the air intake, others said theirs is clean with no MAF? issues. Well when I get the right one I will decide then, (use it or ebay it) as more info may be available.

Tombraider, I have seen K&N's block solid after 5 Klms in bulldust, stuffed a motor in my GT, pull the plenum off and have a look at the crap they let in. Independent tests have shown that K&N let in 38% more dust than a standard paper filter, couldn't give me one, if you want pics of my stuffed motor PM me, Regards Frank.
