I had one on my Rangie 3.9 and took it off for 2 reasons
1 fine dust in the MAF after a trip to Yeranderie
2 Oil contamination of my MAF. 14CUX MAFs are almost unique in that they do not have a burn off cycle on shutdown.
3 I tested the restriction of the barrel aircleaner and snorkel by using a vacuum gauge, to decide on whether to disconnect the snorkel while on bitumin. The total restriction of cleaner , element and snorkel was only 12 inches of water at full throttle. I think the paper filter and canister only added about 5 inches of water. This is nothing. At cruise say 100Kmh there was positive pressure at the MAF, a tiny bit maybe 0.5 inch .
So for a V8 there is no real reason to change to a cone K&N other than noise which makes you think you are going faster.
The only advantage , if miniscule is at Max revs full throttle, a position you are rarely in with a V8, but of course in a diesel you are there most of the time while moving.

Steve, if you look at all the trucks on the road, many of which do millions of Klms you will not find a K&N filter, they are all Paper element filters, Why? because they keep the engine destroying dust out, Regards Frank.Originally Posted by Kandy

the filter discussion rises again.
Heres a short story long.
A good shooting mate of mine Jim Keane, makes filters, Ausfil in Kogarah. mainly for mining machines, liquid and air. Really big ones.and small made to order ones too.
Some years ago when i had the pajero i bought a finer filter from a 4wd expo. Showed Jim he doesn't mince words, and told me in no uncertan terms to put it it the bin as it was a useless piece of junk, as the holes in the foam were too big to be effective and that oiling wouldn't make a great difference.
He then went on to describe how filter medium should work down to a certain micron level. He showed me some of the air filter medium he uses in his products that would trap particles as small as mite poo.fine dust too.
He recommended I stay with a good brand of paper filter and to change it regularly. We were going to make some for the pajero, but the cost was going to be high.

I did see somewhere ( a site that explained the workings of a maf) that the use of foam filters was not good for the maf as it let too much air flow past it and it affected the way it measured whatever it measuresand that the maf was designed for a certain amount of air flow or internal atmosphere and you could use more fuel by using a non standard type of filter.
But how much worse can fuel economy get on a Landrover petrol lets face it. I dont use mine much and here why. I did 200 k on the weekend towing my camping trailer on flat ground and it used 45 litres. My truck gets better milage and it carries 8500kg. My Landy is nice to drive but I might have to sell it and buy a diesel![]()

Sure you can have "filters" with better/higher air flow rates than paper ones that "strangle your engine" (usual emotive descriptions used by foam/oil and other manufacturers) - but you also need better filtering medium than something that screens out pidgeons that got in the way of your vehicle's road!
