    ecu harness flushing ideas.

    Hi Guys
My ECU harness is full of oil thanks to the injector harness problem.
Starting this post to collect "flushing ideas"
Kie4s suggestion was to find the lowest point of the ecu harness and cut the sheath to let the oil out,not too keen on this as I dont think it would be possible to seal it properly against water later.
My idea is to fit a pipe over the engine end of the harness secure with a couple of hose clamps fill with metho then force it thru with a low air pressure(ECU end unplugged).Hopefully the metho dissolves the oil and moves it along.
Do you think it will work???
    Any other ideas???

    Andy,

I reently put a thread on looking for ideas to fix this problem. I was loking at replacing the harness and then looking at a fix. Hope someone has some good ideas. I have spoken to MR auto's in Redcliffe Qld who do ECU chipping etc for landies (Bruce Davis PL jobs, they just pull the ECU and send it to him) and they mentioned they do a small modification to the harness when replacing it to stop the oil ingress. I'll give them a call thru the week to see if they will divulge their secret.

    cheers

    Hi All
I am about to replace both harness in the disco but i thought that I would have a play with the old ones I was thinking just a little air pressure would most likely force the oil out. I have made a cap out of some very thin aluminum sheet to go over the top of the injector harness but I am still looking for a sealant to fill the back of the plug before I attach it.
    Regards
    Doug

Sorry but it won't work - the oil migrates through the inner cable - you know the bit where the wire is - so flushing externally will do naff all.

You would need to soak the loom in a bath of fluid, that doesn't attack the pvc in the plactic and drain several times.

I have been/still am working on a physical 'break' in the loom where the individual signal wires (7) go through a phisical break using plug - socket - wire loop - socket - plug.

The wire loops would sit in a 'box' with the metal of the wire exposed at a low level to allow oil to drain out. These loops would sit in replaceable high density foam that can be removed, washed/cleaned and re-placed, bot the 'box' would also have a drain at the low point to enable excess oil to drip out via a hose.

    Still very much in development.

If somebody has an old loom (I run V8 not diesel) for me to have a practice on - that would help.

    Hi Ladas
According to the dealer it does BOTH.Firstly up the injector harness thru the inside of the wires, then when it leaves the head it travels both inside and outside the wires to the ECU.They told me its not worth replacing the main harness as the problem will go away once all the oil is gone after the injector harness is replaced.

I don't think you should put stuff like that down the toilet. But hey... if it makes you feel better....

Andy, spot on - sorry I forgot to mention this, yet it goes on the outside as well as the inside - so you could wash the outside - but as long as the oil continues to migrate - it will continue to travel through the inside.

............but at this stage we haven't reached a point where we can stop the migration - hence my little project

I think we are both on the same track,Ive stoped the flow (HOPEFULLY) but still have the main harness full. Its this Im wanting to flush clean.I was discussing your idea with Dave(Blknight.aus) today,Im in agreeance,I dont think a catch can is required just a new join after the original that is totally oil proof, the oil should just drip off the connection, plenty of heat there to keep it flowing.
The biggest aid to the problem is the fact that the male section is in the head and the female part is the lower "catch cup" and the spare unused pin holes in the connector direct the flow into the harness. Its not possible but simply reversing this connector would allow the oil to leak out over the connector rather than pooling in and draining internally.
Keep up your posts Im sure with the combined brains trust here we will get a simple solution.Once mine is clean Im willing to risk cutting the harness and fitting an extra connector. My Mrs is an ex-electronics assembler so should be able to do it.
