Auto, throttle or Kick down cable issue??

    G'Day All,
Just got back from a little drive and the Disco has an issue.

Ive noted latley it holds onto gears longer....ie holds a gear much longer before changing up than it used to, which I didnt mind because before it kind of fell into the higher gears around town.

Any hoo now when I take off the auto stays in 1st for ever and only changes when the revs get to 3,000-3,500rpm.

It go's straight into reverse and drive no probs there....but I noted that the lower cable to the injector pump isnt almost straight now....its all cured up, looks like the cable is now much longer........

Auto was serviced about 2 months ago, but Im thinking more it just needs the cables ajusted etc....well thats what Im hoping anyway.

    Any help please?

Thanks Chris, I will take cable off the trottle lever and have a look whats going on.

I guess I need to take cable off and reset all idle settings etc?

Just wondering.....is there any chance the cable has broken?....i guess not as I can still use the trottle, looks like its streched or something....heaps of slack at the pump end.

Thanks Tony........thats the first thing I looked at.....its about 2mm over the full mark.

Is this still the way to check auto oil level; while motor is running, run it through the gears, then get out and check dip stick, wipe off and re check while in park or neutrel??

If so level is fine ie 2mm past Full mark

close enough for the tx check however make sure that the TC is full by running the engine to 1500 rpm for about 1 minute prior to idling back, selecting Reverse, drive then park (10 sec in each minimum) then pull and wipe and redip the transmission. Ideally do this AFTER having driven the car and warmed the oil... you should be well over the full mark with hot oil and on the full mark with cold.

It will probabley be missalignment of what you are refering to as the kickdown cable. having this stretch results in early shifts not late as the gear box is reading the throttle being lower than it really is and having the cable kinked or dragging or incorrectly fitted to the gearbox (may be loose at the throttle arm) for whatever reason results in later shifts (this also depends on the transmission type) as the gearbox is reading the throttle position as being higher than it really is.

It could also be sticking throttle pressure valve in the TX, pressure regulator failed to Higher pressure(youd also have very harsh shifts) or a failed (internal) seal on the supply to the shifting part of the brain.

the faults are listed in order of likely hood and for once, expense to repair.

The solution is to remove said auto and install a manual (you all knew it was coming)

The return spring on the cable could be broken.
As with the other entry, the cable could have melted from being too close to the exhaust.
