I have a GME uhf in the over head consul in my 97 disco.
I had to file a bit out of the plastic to make it fit and all the wires run down the A pillar and is held in with 2 small self tapping screws but could use a couple more to stop a vibration that sometimes gives me the sh!ts.
It is all easy to pull apart and fit back up and you can just run the wires lipped into the roof lining at the front and the consul holds it all back up when it's re fitted.
The A pillar cover just clips of and theres easy access down to just behind the fuse box.
My mike cable when not in use fits neatly in next to the UHF so is not dangling around and the mike clip is mounted on the flat bit where the sunroof switch goes.
When it is in use, it is nowhere near your face, it hangs down just at the front of the consul and only hangs about 5" to 6" and never gets in the way.
I find it is the perfect place to put it though it is hard to see the screen as it is so high but not impossible, you just do it while your stopped.

Hmmn, some interesting and very practical solutions to this query... I have mine in My Disco up in the over head console, it does very well there.
A little trick, wire up an extension lead for the mic unit and have it go down A pillar down to centre console somewhere out of the way and easy to access, it's what I did and it works a treat - no hanging wires at all!
As for where to place aerial... depends on what type of aerial you use (so much to not say here - it can get very expensive), best place is always as high as possible and with the most metal below it, ie center of your roof is best. I have two spots on my vehicle, one massive one on my bull bar that I hardly ever use it is huge!! The other is mounted on my drivers side roof gutter, I again have two different aerials I mount here. 1) a small durable bendy one for around town and bush bashing. 2) a 6db high quality whip aerial.

I said I would post some photos, so here they are.
It could be done better but I was in a hurry doing the small stuf before we went to Alice and have never got back to it to clean it up a bit.
As far as arial goes, I used to use whips, with amplifying coils etc and have never had much luck with the crappy bases that they use.
Id had a really good totaly sealed base years ago but I havnt seen them in years.
The arial I have now was given to me so I dont know exactly what it is but GB coms (I think they are called) recon it is a good one thats worth a bit of dough.
It works great, it's white so it suits the car, its on a sprung base and is tough.
To top it off, when I have the rack on it is only a inch shorter than the rack and 3" shorter than the tent so It makes it easy to judge when your going to take the rack off in a KFC driveway or under ground car park.
here's mine. admittedly I have to lean over to see the channel, but that's no problem I hardly use any more than 2 of them
