Unhappy Help Vibration, and Crackling noise?

Hi all, I have a 97 Tdi, tonight coming home from the outlaws, I had to pass a vehicle going uphill, after pulling out to overtake, the Disco started to vibrate in 3rd gear? it then proceeded to do the same when I changed to 4th, once up the hill, I pulled over, listened to the motor, all sounded ok, pulled out and alll seemed ok, after travelling again for about 4klm came to a slight incline travelling at about 8oklm an hour then the same vibration again on the incline? When we got closer to home, I was able to wind the window down, on acceleration and decelleration I can hear some funny crackiling noises from the front, could it be a bearing? Ie Wheel or a Diff Bearing? The motor is idling fine, no loss of power?
Its interesting to note that the Disco was fine for the run down to the City which is 35klm away.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers

have a look under your truck at your front tail shaft, could be your problem, check for play in the unis and spline, mine was showing similar signs when it went... that would be a good place to start.

Been under the old girl this afternoon, the uni's seem ok, the funny clinking and crackling noise is quite prominent in 1st and 2nd? it sound a bit like a car thats CV joint are going?
I changed the diff oil yoday and looked for telltale metal ect but to no avail!!
Looks like a visit to Triump Rover here in SA and hand over $$$,
I hope it's not the gearbox, but it seems ok?
    Any other toughts?
The left hand front wheel has bit of give, I'm wondering if the bearing has collapsed?

I would've thought that cvs would show up with the wheels on full lock first, not going straight.

if your certain the noise is coming from the front.. jack up the whole front jackstands under the axle style and waggle the wheels. got movement, have someone hold the brakes on hard and waggle again..

first test is for overall movement and the second eliminates the bearings and isolates it to the swivels.

noise/movement not evident at the wheels in this test?

rejack it and support with the wheels clear of the ground via chassis supports.

waggle everything and get in all the suspension joints with a pry bar or big screwdriver, anywhere you can get metal to metal contact to occour is bad and needs new mounts, replace em in sets.

hope thats helpful now the basic driveline has been eliminated.

Just an update, had the front left and right hand side C.V's, bearings replaced, also got new rotors on and pads, as they had to come off anyway, and hadn't been touched since I got her, also had a new front prop shaft as the old one was very suspect, so now the Disco is good for another 100.000klm!!!!! Wot ya think?
PS just found a set of 300tdi INJ on Ebay, in the UK for $268.00 AU plus freight!!!! Just sent an email!!!!
    cheers
