Disco 200tdi - shake on shutdown and general engine roughness

Hi - have a 93 200tdi Disco. Purchased 4 years ago with 200Kk on the clock - now around 270Kk. When purchased, the oil pressure light stayed on at idle, but disappeared with the slightest throttle input. I still purchased due to good nick/price/service records etc. I had the problem checked out, oil pump was fine and couldn't get a conclusive answer, so just wound up the idle speed a tad and run Castrol Magnatec to ensure protection. About 5Kk ago after a long trip, the engine started to feel a bit coarse even though it wasn't down on power (and injectors replaced recently/fuel pump adjusted etc). After putting in fresh oil on the weekend, it feels even rougher, so I'm assuming it's a mechanical issue - bottom end wear maybe? Any ideas?

An issue which I think is unrelated is that about 20Kk ago, it started to give a pronounced shake on shutdown. The engine mounts seem ok - what else could this be due to?

    Thanks

P.S. I should have mentioned that the engine doesn't use any oil and the oil stays remarkably clean suggesting efficient combustion if that helps the diagnosis...

valve train would be my first port of call, they have some history in that area.

just because you have correct lash adjustment doesnt neccessarily mean the rockers etc are okay.

Oil light on idle usually means crank case pressure. This is caused by worn pioston rings blowing exhaust gases into the bottom of the engine. Two ways to check. Start the engine and take out the dip stick. If it blows air out and a bit of oil. Then there is your problem. Also tends to blow the rear main oil seal. So have a look and see if your bell houseing is leaking oil.
Also you can take off the oil filler when it is running and see if it is chuffing. In other words trying to look like thomas the tank engine

The noise could be the piston rings really going now causeing the pistons to have a bit more room to move and hence a slight slap of the piston. Which would make the ruffer old knackered ford transit noise

Not meaning to worry you but if the rings go too much you can have the engine suck up the oil from the bottom of the engine and have the engine run away running on its own oil. Not nice and no way to stop it

a calibrated air flow gun can reveal the condition of your rings on a diesel, not perfectly but enough for what your likely to need..

alternatively plug up the engine, and apply not morethan 14psi of air to the glow plug/injector hole and remove the dipstick.. listen and if possable apply a flow/pressure gauge to it and see whats leaking past...

assuimg that the rings dong leak if it doesnt leave its idiot light on when its frist started, is idling and is cold (but does once its warmed up) then I would suggest that your starting to get bearing wear that is on the end of the limits...
