Power steering oil cooler
G`day all, anyone fitted an oil cooler in their power steering return line.
I`ve had a few ocassions where my oil has been very airated, I don`t think it has actually boiled as the fluid seems OK, I am thinking of fitting a small cooler in front of the radiator to see if it helps at all, I think the problem is more related to high RPM than actual heat, as my TD5 spends a bit of time on the limiter, sometimes it actually overflows and blows a bit of fluid out of the reservior, as well as a squeeling sound from the steering box. I am hoping with fitting a cooler the extra oil capacity may help a bit.
Anyone done anything similar and can shed some light on if it made any difference or not.
Thanks

G'day Col, mine does the same, especially in tight areas ie frequent lock to lock, although I do try not to make it squeal. What I've thought about doing, is rather than fit an oil cooler, fit a spin on oil filter assembly, so you get the extra oil capacity, locate it so it gets some ventilation/cooling, and you get nice cool, clean fluid, with an easy to change filter. It's all good.

You could try running Castrol Transmax Z instead of the OE Texaco power steering stuff. It tolerates high temps much better, or just run Redline MTL, yep, the 75W-80 gear box oil. Tim Slako, the Redline importer, tipped me off to this one when I was quizzing him which would be the best fluid just to combat this. Works fine as a hydraulic fluid and gives better protection to the steering box. A lot of racers use it in lieu of an ATF to combat boiling/foaming.
I use Transmax Z as it gets a bit colder than where you are in winter

Thanks for that, I have a spare bottle of MTL so might switch on it, the gearbox does`nt really like it, so I may as well chuck it in the power steering, and a cooler and filter might just be the go as well.
Thanks again
