    Flickering Oil Pressure warning light

Disco 300TDi with almost 200,000Kms on the clock. Oil changed a couple of weeks ago (not filter) and dipstick shows level is good. On Saturday the oil warning light started to flicker when idling, went out as soon as the throttle was touched, never showed while moving even over rough terrain. Yesterday the light comes on hard when idling and also when coasting to a halt e.g. at traffic lights. I'm not sure but it may not be happening when the engine is cold.
Hoping for a defective pressure switch.
Suggestions of what to check/replace in what order are welcome....

put a pressure guage on and check it as soon as possible even though the light goes out at the higher rpm you may only be running 10-15 psi in the motor,if the light is not coming on at idle when cold but does when warm I would suspect a more serious problem, may be the pressure relief valve is bypassing.

Do not drive it any more till you get it checked out hopefully it is something simple and cheap,a couple of years ago we had a contracter working on this job laying fibre optic cable he had just had the motor overhauled and had the same problem at full revs there was only 8 psi some idiot had used way to much silicone to seal up the sump it had gone through the motor blocking most of the gallaries.

There is only one good use for silicone and it is nowhere near motors
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Does anyone know what thread the pressure sensor is? I'm trying to find a local mech to test the oil pressure but they don't know if their guage will fit.

Dave, not changing the oil filter when you change the oil is a No No, the filter may be blocked and the By-Pass valve maybe be blocked as well, there may be some crud holding open the Oil Pressure Valve in the oil pump, check your oil pressure then flush old oil and fit a NEW filter and good quality oil, any GOOD mechanic will have adaptors to fit your oil pressure sender thread, or go and buy a good quality guage (VDO or Smiths) and fitting kit and you will always have an accurate picture of your engines oil system, Regards Frank.

Frank - This was a 5000Km oil change, inbetween the 10,000Km normal services where the oil and oil filter would be changed together. I thought everyone (those that do it) did an oil-only change then?

I do my oil and the filter at the same time every 5k.

Had the same problem in my 300TDI in my defender. Replaced the oil pressure switch and no more problems. Not that expensive if you dont get them from the stealers!!!

I would have been little point in just changing the oil and not the filter - I always change the filter every oil change - the filters are not that expensive.

Maybe for a V8 they aren't that expensive but for a diesel they can get slightly costly.
