    Td 300 Disco

    Hi Guys

I have a friend who just purchased an automatic Td300 Disco (1993 I believe) which has transfer box problems. (His other Disco is a TD200 manual)

Should this 1993 Disco have a 3 speed or a 4 speed auto? (If a 3 speed is it a TorqueFlyte 727 like the '85 Rangies?)

How compatible would the 4 speed ZF auto/ BorgWarner transfer transmission from an '89 V8 Rangie be with the 300TD Disco engine?

How difficult would the conversion be?

    Regards
    Diana

I thought the 300Tdi came out in 1994? Either way the Tdi200 and Tdi300 had the 4 speed ZF with LT230. No idea about the transfer case compatability. There would be driveshaft issues with this I'd imagine

I'm pretty sure that the auto only came in the 300 series (in oz) and they were 94' builds not late 93 when the first updates came out. It is the ZF 4spd not a 3spd TF727 ( these only in 83- 85 rangies). You cant use the V8 ZF and i wouldnt even look at the borgwarner unless you are 100% sure it is in A1 condition.

No, we had automatic diesels in 200Tdi from 1992.

Hi Guys - thanks for info.

I could be quite wrong about the year, but it is a 300Tdi auto, it is just over the phone stuff.

Will investigate the 3 speed, with owner, could it be possible that someone retro'd an '83 - '85 727 into a disco?.

Otherwise I actually have a complete '85 rangie with 727 and LT 230 transfer sitting in a shed as a parts donor. Would it be possible to fit the Disco ZF to this LT 230 from these early Phase II Rangies?

    Any ratio issues etc?

    Diana

BTW. The 89 Rangie with ZF was a going concern till someone tail ended it, now it's just a parts donor too. The transmission would have been very cheap to buy.

There should be one floating around Australia somewhere.
In 1993, LR Aust imported a Carrigada Green 'KA' Disco 200Tdi Auto for evaluation. As far as I know, it remained in Australia.
If you thought the 300Tdi autos are a dog when cold, you should try the 200Tdi auto !!

Didn't realise you couldn't get auto diesels in the early models. I guess that is why I drive a manual petrol

There is a hell of a lot more than one here. Funnily enough I have seen three for sale (two of which were at Range Rov) and one was test driven by us. Furthermore in their Discovery buying guide 4wd monthly rated the 200Tdi Automatic as in their opinion, "the most reliable, strongest Discovery"

They were available in Australia from the 1994MY, on LA chassis, 200TDI, according to ULR. (Not 1992 as I earlier mention which is when they came in the UK).

Bottom line though is that I have far more important things to be thinking about than arguing such a ridiculous point as above. What is it about automatic drivers? Talk about chip or what

    Happy New Year.
