    110 reversing light

Yesterday investigated why the reversing light on my 110 has started staying on. No, it is not a faulty switch! The wires to the switch (on top of the gearbox) are connected by bullet connectors to the main harness and a wire coming through the firewall behind an added plate on the firewall - one of these connectors had contacted the sharp edge of the air cleaner which had gone between the two halves of the connector, shorting the wires (both are live when in reverse) melting the insulation and shorting the wires together. It also melted a hole in the vacuum line to the diff lock, fortunately mostly blocked by the wire, but vacuum may now be a bit better.

Replaced the section of wires, and put a joiner on the vacuum line.

In true Lucas fashion, as far as I can see the circuit is unfused.

Thanks for sharing - this is one of the few lights on my 110 which has never had any problems - even though I added a 2nd one on the other side.

Does your light only work while the engine is running - like mine? Any idea how that works?

fuses arent needed......the switches will blow to protect the wiring on a land rover.....

the reverse lights should come on in reverse with the ignition on......shouldnt need to have the engine running......
if this is the case....then it must be getting its power fron the "N" terminal on the alternator.......

JD, come up to Brisbane and fix mine. The bloody thing stopped working within a week of buying the car.

yep its run from a secondary oil switch in the engine in series with the reversing switch...

eyeball the block of your 3.9 on the right hand side you'll see what looks to be 2 oil pressure switches. (ones on the oil filter assy or thereabouts) and one is one the block right nextdoor to the bellhousing adaptor.

Its an Australian (or rather isuzu) special. I suspect because the ignition switch used on the Isuzu does not have an accessory position, if you use the radio for example, while parked, if it were in reverse the reversing light would be on. I can think of no other possible reason.

actualluy the IGN switch does have an acc position and its not used...

IMHO it stops people from leaving the reverse lights on with the engine off if you park facing up a hill and rely on the gearbox and compression as the parkbrake...

more likely once upon a time it would have been to turn the fuel cutoff solenoid off in the event of low oil pressure but since the 3.9 is prone to intermittantly dropping to a low, but still workable, oil pressure at idle esp when hot that was discontinued. Since the switch was there they might as well have it do something...

other than that, Because they can?

they could have powered up the radio via the coolant temperature switch........
