Air horn relay, do I need to use it?

    Hi all
I got fed up with my RRC squeak of a horn so I got an air horn that I wanted to wire up to replace the existing horn.
The airhorn comes with a relay.
I looked in the instructions and it shows how to use it so I can select air horn or existing horn with a switch.

Can't I just replace the existing horn using the existing + and - earth?
Might it bugger something up if I do

    ta

use the relay with the original wires from the horn to activate and a + wire from your battery to supply power to the relay

yes you can replace the original with a air horn but you still need a relay

also check your local roads department some dont agree with air horns (legal reasons)

Air horns draw a fair bit of current. Use the relay.

    Hi Steve
It switches a Hi Amp load with a low amp trigger wire.It means your hi amp item, the horn in your case or spotlights or many other items in a vehicle dont need great heavy power wires run up into the cabin and back.
As sombody already suggested use the wire on your exsisting horn to trigger the relay, ensure you have a suitable fuse on your supply wire as close to the battery as possible.(Im talking about the new wire you will run from your battery to the new relay then onto the new air horn.)

LOL, no just a fog horn type noise, I just wanted to make sure if I'm going over a blind hill / corner that someone on the other side knows I'm comming !
They just might think it's a train that's all

Thanks for that link dobbo just like Andy said. Now it makes sence and I won't burn out my wiring.

I tried air horns without a relay once upon a time, didn't work too well.....

Instead of blasting possums out of trees, the horns slowly wound up to about half noisy...

...a relay made all the difference.

There is (or was) a wiring diagram for relays here - I think it was FenainEel who started a thread called 'old driving lights' about late November 2006.

It helped me when I did the 'new driving lights' recently...
    (same wiring story for horns)....

    This might help.

You will need to know whether your existing horn wire is positive or negative and then connect it to either pin 85 or 86 accordingly
