    Portable Battery Charger

Has anybody owned or used the Cristies Engineering, Honda powered Battery charger .

I am after opinions and experiences of using the charger as opposed to taking a generator for the fridge when not moving camsites very often.

    thanks

    those things are freaking fandamntastic...

Im getting one as an APU to go in the trailer im making out of bug 2.0

the truck mob I last worked for in townsville has 2 and uses them to run the truck electrics and emergancy hydraulic pump. (12v startermotor)

their only complaint... Its not diesel so you have to watch what fuel jerry you grab

This thread has stirred me to get out & run a Honda E300U which I inherited some years ago.
Nice little unit, 300w & 12v Batt. charger.
Couple of questions which the little manual doesn't appear to answer.

    1. When I place a digital multi meter across the charger leads without a battery connected, the lowest DC voltage I can get is apx. 29v. Will this alter when a battery is hooked up to a "safe" level? I thought it would be something like 14/15volts output. Am I wrong?

    2. 240v is ok & can be varied, but it has a what I think is a crap vibrating leaf frequency meter on it. Without a multi meter connected, it is difficult to set a voltage or am I missing something here?
To make matters worse imho, it is a"vertical" type as opposed to the horizontal type shown in the manual.

For normal emergency use, I also have a 15A genny (300 kva ???) & the Honda hardly gets used.

the earlier models suffered from over volts without the battery on, hook the battery up then start it.... its to do with the fact that in a nutshell its an alternator on a whippersnipper engine, all the usual alternator rules apply.

Thanks, Dave. So, when it's hooked up, then I should see 13 - 15 volts at the batt. terms then?

if after testing the volts are still out Take it in anyway, the adjustment is maybe a 15 minute job tops...

Alternatively to a stand alone battery just get a car with no electronics to fry, turn on all the accessories you can (fans, hi beams, driving lights you getthe idea) and crank it up with the multimeter on the battery.. do this with your hand on the positive clamp from the genny.

it should get to 14.4ish volts max and if it goes over just pull the clamp. a second or 2 of up to about 20 volts wont hurt anything in a Dumb car.

If your not game enough I'll take it off your hands, its obviously defective
