Thread: Discovery central door locks - interesting tip

Hi Shifter. I replaced my door motors in my Disco1 as they failed with Jaycar units. I found that the current draw of the aftermarket motors was too great for the thin wires of the factory setup. If the engine was not running or just recently switched off then the door motors would play up due to voltage drop.

So after talking to garycol from this forum I installed the Jaycar control unit ($14ish) and all new wiring so the entire factory door locking circuit was redundant. I spent ages trying to adapt the two systems but in the end I saw the light and did as I said above. No problems since. Should of done it as soon as the first motor failed.

I found a drivers side original actuator and when I connect it in to the ststem still no go. The two rear doors are firmly locked and I cannot release them by pulling on the hand linkage. The rear door however, is lockable with the key as are both front doors. Is there a controller somewhere in the system that could be buggered?

You should still be able to pull up on the door locks by hand. They must be jammed.

The driver's door motor does the controlling.

As I said above you should just rewire it with the Jaycar controller. I stuffed with it for days trying to make it work. The original wiring is just too thin for the Jaycar units.

Have you tried it with the engine running?

The higher voltage will negate the voltage drop over the thin wires if that is the cause.

Yeah, tried it with the engine running still no joy. Rear doors remain firmly locked. I will investigate the LH pax door at the W/E to see if there is a problem there. Failing that I don't understand what is going on. I have a rear door lock a year or so ago, and fitted a Jaycar type lock. when it failed the other locks still worked, now nothing works and the rear doors are firmly locked. It's got me fkd!!!

The plot thickens, today I found the rear two door lock completely seized. I replaced then with Jarcar type locks and they now work, but the pax side and the rear door still do not. Another visit to Jaycar tomorrow should do the trick - I hope!

Yes there is a central locking controler module under the passenger footwell behind the front black kick pannel. It may be easier to see if you remove the glove box too. it is pretty hard to get out, 2 6mm bolts/nuts if i remember rightly. This is where all the controllers are kept - ABS, central locking, cruise control etc etc.

Ps there is a good one advertised on ebay...plug plug for me....

Have you checked the position of the child proof locks on the rear doors?
