Well, its appart and the right angled bit is fine and so are the springs.

I undid all the bolts and the gearstick pulled straight out the top. But there was a little round ball on the end of the gear stick that goes into the box and it dropped off the end into the box. I got it out and its supposed to slip over the smaller diameter section on the end of the gear stick but there isnt anything that holds it into place. There appears to be some sort of cradle inside the box for it to sit in but the hole in the cradle is much larger than the metal ball so it drops straight through. Is there supposed to be something there for it to sit in. On top of the cradle there was a circlip looking thing but without the eyes to clip it into place, it doesnt appear broken but the surface of the ball is scored somewhat.

Its got me stuff but i am confident it has something to do with the gear leaver as reverse, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th are working ok there is just some trouble getting the gearstick from 1st to second when you stop at lights or something. Matt

That vehicle of yours has an LT77 box doesn't it ? there is a little gearlever "Ball End" as discribed in the "Mob from Melbourne's Book" page 40 illustration 7VCR price $17.60 plus freight same type of thing that is in the Series 3 lever end, probably a nylon push fit thing

I have been looking at my parts picture and I think I know what you are looking at. It doesn't show that ball being separate to the stick, but it does show some pins going into the side of the ball. Maybe these are supposed to retain it?

I have now looked further inside and I can see another ball. It looks to be retained by a bush (nylon perhaps) that comes up from underneath (FTC2203).

It could also be the bush that has the serations in it, same page Illustration 4JM Sperical Ball, which is held in place by the Roll pin in the lower gearlever ball, It is only $11.00 ea, If you have to replace any of these, do both while you have access to them

The R380 box list the same set-up ( page 44)

    cheers

Bigjon hit the nail on the head. It appears that the nylon bush has broken appart and fallen down into the box to be be chewed to death. The little metal ring that holds it into place was still there but not a single piece of nylon bush to be seen anywhere. Because the bush is gone the metal ball falls through the yolk and down onto whatever is below it. The metal ball is what was catching when i changed into first and why the other gears felt as though they were in a slightly different place when i changed gears. The new part is around $6 plus another $88 for an A-Frame ball join and she will be as good as new when the part arrives tomorrow. All i need to do now is grow two more arms so i can manage to get it up from underneath and get the clip in place so i can fix it.

It looks to me as though this happens all the time so to all those people who think they have serious gearbox problems when this happens it only coss $6 to fix. It feels like its bad but it isnt.

Oh, the metal plate and the springs were fine. Matt

Just looked at the picture in Four Wheel Drives' Part Catalogue and as UncleHo said the ball is part 7TR, the nylon bush is 8TR and the metal clip is 6TR. The metal ball is fine it has some score marks on it but should be fine. Matt
