    Noisey Overdrive

    Hi All,

Anyone know what a good treatment would be for a noisey overdrive. I run EP90 in the unit.generally i heard there is not much you can do.
    any thoughts would be good.

    cheers

    in order of effectiveness

    rebuild it

    fill it with nulon

fill it with blended 80/90 and molybond 50/50 ratio

the last 2 will quieten it abit maybe prolong its life but not actually fix the problem.

I would suspect that its completely normal
I have never heard a quiet one change the oil regularly and use good quality oil.
They are a weakness in the drive train and will eventually suffer spline failure in a long wheel base.
I have heard that they are less susceptible to failure if left in all the time I cant imagine why when you look at their design.
25 years ago they were noisy and in good condition we tried synthetic oil to no avail.

Doubt if this will help but they are noisy by nature

i have a toro but they are similar.

good quality oil without additives is the best way to go, change it every 10000 klms minimum if it is a fairy.

They are frequently noisy. I replaced all the bearings plus input shaft (RTC7168) and dog (RTC7170) in mine, but should have replaced the gears RTC 7192 and RTC 7187, so it is still noisy. The problem is that parts other than seals and bearings are very expensive. On the plus side they will continue for a long time making a lot of noise. Failure is most likely to be due to wear on the input dog and input shaft - this does not get adequate lubrication and there is a good case for removing the overdrive at intervals of perhaps 10,000 miles and regreasing this part. Apart from this failure is most likely to be from lack of lubrication, and it is important to check the oil level at leat every 1000 miles as the capacity is very small and they have a habit of either throwing the oil out or leaking it into the transfer case.

In the 'good old days' traders use to poke a ladies stocking (nylons) in to the oil fill hole whilst it was running, the nylon was snatched up by the gears and 'coated' everything nicely, and made things super quiet................................for about 6 months or less

    Wouldn't recommend it though
