OK - I got rid of the jump leads. Pulled the 2 6volt 770CCA batteries out of the tractor linked them up in series. Connected a pair of winch supply cables (12mm copper) direct to the chassis and the main terminal on the starter using proper lugs. Touched the solenoid switch screw to the positive all as before and woooooooshhhhhh. The engine turned over like it had a prime mover starter driving it. Bled the injector pump and fuel lines and tried again and the motor burst into life.

Gentlemen thanks for a really worthwhile Thread. So obvious in hindsight but had me stumped.

The engine sounds sweet. Now I can move on to putting the body back together and inventing a new dash, and ....................................

Once again thanks. What a great knowledge base this place has.

    Glad thats sorted.
Reminds me of the fright I got when after fitting the 4BD1 and trans into the Rangie, front panels off, electrics on, single 550CCA battery on, I decided to just 'touch ' the solenoid contacts. After 2 years and no prior bleeding, the thing started and ran, NO exhaust out of the turbo, NO cooling system connected, NO throttle cable, NO glow circuit( STill isn't connected...) etc, IT JUST STARTED and ran as sweet as a nut. Almost instant oil pressure, you get the picture.
    You gotta love these Isuzus.
