may have just been a bit of dirt in the master......
how was the brake fluid that came out 3 months ago........was it really bad....?
or was it clean....?
what about what came out this time...?

I'm inclined to agree with Defenderzook - master cylinder. Hard to see it being anything else. Possibly a bit of dirt both allowed leakage past the seal and also stuck the cylinder enough that the spring only slowly returned it.

i cant see how pads would affect the pedal......
even if they were made out of jelly....you should have some sort of feel to the pedal.......
it is interesting though......i have fitted el cheapo pads to the rear of lurch....havent had any problems yet......
but am now starting to worry......
John, now that I've slept on it I am tending towards it being the Master cylinder, it seems to be the only rational explanation, I will go through it completely and rebuild the lot.
John on another note, the 2.25 I bought off you has a profile cut 1" thick steel spacer between the sump and the block, I haven't dropped the sump off yet as I don't have it setup on the engine stand yet, I was wondering if it is a Spacer or a bearing girdle that supports the main bearings. Have you come across this before in your travels, btw I scraped off all the oil soaked dust covering the motor, in some places it was more than 2" thick, weighed it all and it was 10KGs, I think the former owner used to stand back 10' and throw the oil at it. Head's off, bores are glazed up, but there is no lip in the bore or any gouges, so a hone and new rings may do the job, how's the fire situation, hope all is well, Regards Frank.

That sump spacer is interesting, what is the Engine No (I don't want the last 2 didgitsas this could have been a stationary engine application, or could have been a "Special" with increased sump capacity. does it look like a factory fit or a home/engineering shop conversion.
cheers
UncleHo, engine number is 9069051**, it is out of a Series III 81 model, I bought it off JDNSW who thought it was a 5 Main bearing block, but it turned out to be a 3 Bearing block (has the 2 piece rear main oil seal), it has a Viscous fan and some interesting oil pressure switches (2 of) on the oil filter head. I haven't dropped the sump yet because my chain block has gone walkabout. The spacer looks to have been cut on a profile cutter, it is not painted like the rest of the block, BTW it is a Diesel, be interesting to see the rest of it, any clues, JDNSW knows the history of this motor and vehicle, Regards Frank.
my sump spacer looks the same, been cut with an oxy profile cutter...
i have an accessory part number for them somewhere...
