sorry to be PITA, but if its pink is it definitely OAT, I'm having a ****load of trouble sourcing new coolant. The only place anyone seems to have heard of it is on this site, cant get any satisfaction from any franchise within a 3ookm radius. And on another point, mine has been running green stuff since new, so can I assume its OAT and just flush it and add the pink, or should I assume LR predelivery is as good as their warranty and fear the worst, that Ive been driving around for 50000kms on the wrong coolant??

Crump just be 110% sure the old coolant is completely out of the system before you replace it. The electrolosys not only permits rusting but also creates a goo inside the cooling system that blocks it.

For the record I have heard of some Japanese manufacturers having the same problem.

can't comment on the turbo crack but as Chris says, it's possibly due to the coolant quenching it.
Normaly would agree but The tank is on the oppisite side of the engine bay. They had a new radiator put in recently by Natrad, would they know what they are doing with the Td5? Engine is not making any strange sounds? are Td5 turbos Expensive?
Thanks for all the replies guys i'll pass on the info.

OAT coolant is Organic Acid Technology. Most of the big names sell a coolant of this type now (eg Castrol Antifreeze SF-O).

As for a radiator place knowing... not necessarily, depends on how on the ball they are. Whilst this coolant isn't just for Td5's its not as common as the old Glycol and so they may just have gone with what they thought was right.

    or......

if it came to our workshop it would have got the green stuff......right up until shell took over from castrol.....

from that date it would get the red stuff......

what im saying is......some places just dont care......and the customers usually have no idea.....

the mechanics may know what should be in there....but dont have a choice as to what is actually used......
they just have to use what they are told to use.....and how much.....
i see it every day.....and am forced to do it myself.....

red and green even get mixed together because the system doesnt get flushed.....just drained and filled......
yes this sort of thing happens all the time.....the boss says you have half an hour to do the service and coolant.....the drain plug comes out of the radiator.....
the sump plug comes out of the sump and the oil filter is replaced....then when the liquids finish draining....the plugs are refitted......
and the cooling system is filled with a couple of litres of coolant(if enough drained out )....if there is more room...it is topped up with water.....
doesnt matter what colour came out or what goes in....the sump is filled with oil and its all done...

as far as the customer knows.....its all been taken care of....the mechanic knows what needs to be done
but has no choice if he wants to be paid........and any damage to the cooling system wont be evident for a year or so.....

ok...now you get the picture....ill say it in plain english.....

if you want to know what goes on with your vehicle....you need to do it yourself......
or find a mechanic that actually cares......usually one that works for himself......

this is fascinating. In the TD5 engine life thread we saw that radiators typically died causing overheating after a few years. Reading this it sounds as though the real cause is people putting in the wrong type of coolant. Fascinating.

    HAVOLENE from caltex DISTRIBUTOR,
    around $40 for 4 litres,,

though I only bought it for a top-up
not sure if ONE is enough for a complete refill

and yes,, V8s and TD5s use the same--

I know the Canberra NatRAd guys who recored my radiator had never seen the TD5 radiator before. They even thanked me for letting them do it. I droped it of and colelcted it as the rig was at home so I chose the replacement coolant but the guy did warn me that they found a lot of gunk from mixed coolants in it.
