What spare parts/lubes should I pack?????

    Hello all!

What spares parts/lubes etc. should I be taking for my 05 Defender on a 3 week trip to Tassie - main 4wding is west coast area for a week. Before anyone says it, yes, i have a spare tyre. ha!

What spare parts/lubes ets. would you advise as critical? ...

If anythign out of my capabilities went wrong then i would get it to an authorised repairer ASAP. I supose i am asking - what is something that could go wrong that i could bring a spare along to get me out of trouble. Hmmmm - please don't say the big nasty things that would be totally out of my ability to replace. I was thinking filtres, hoses, oils, coolant etc. Apologies as i have not checked if the handbook that came with the 4wd says anything about this - i think it says what i can and can't touch under the bonnet.

I know I have left this very late.

Warning - could be a dumb question as i am very new to 4wding!

    Thanks in advance!!

There are 2 LR dealers that I can think of in tasmania. One is in Launceston, the other in Hobart. However really there isn't that much distance between many places, and there are a lot of mechanics arount. Unless you are going to be doing some really hardcore off roading, I wouldn't worry too much. otherwise hozes are teh only thing that I can think of off hand.

There are some places you can rent a spares "kit" from for trips though.

    Thanks Phoenix!

    Hoses it is.

I didn't know you could hire spares kits - that's great to know for the future.

Head out to Karcraft in Silverwater for your stuff.

Cheaper than pretty much anywhere else and nice chaps, too.

    Hi Simon,

Thanks for the link to Karcraft. I didn't know about them, and they are close enough to get to.

I just called them. The guy was very helpful!

    G'day Cornerofthegalaxy

The basic Tools/Spares for any road trip be it touring or offroad is, Hoses,Belts,Fuses,Globes S/Tail, Blinker, Park, Interior. a GOOD Jack (floor 1500+kg) you can get one from Supercrudfor about 50? bucks, and a good wheel brace to fit. take a 5ltre of the recommended engine oil, and 500ml Brake fluid. most of that should fit in one of those CrazyClarks/Woolies plastic roller bins, for easy storage AND a quantity of old rags and hand cleaner

If you take coolant, make sure it is the OAT type (not the ordinary green stuff that most servos sell). It can be different colours, but mostly it is red.

Have fun in Tassie. Haven't been there for 20 yrs and should make an effort to look around there again.

    Cheers

    Dont be such a girl

I brought my td5 with 130k on it on a wednesday, friday I got in it, packed to the roof with about 2ton of gear and drive it from Sydney to Karatha, in 3.5 days... then worked for a week and drove home.

So in 2+ weeks I did about 14,000km, I blew one fuse (the only spare I took) and had no issues with anything at any time (except I lost my mud guards)...

I can not get over how scared you all are of driving your td5's ... I have put on nearly 40k on mine in what 5 months, and its alllll good!

Stop reading the scare factor forums and drive it (and yes I have oil in my harness, its its a easy fix), yes I fixed / checked the oil pump issue, and yes I service it ever 8-10k with full lube service, but I am not scared of driving it and can not be arsed lugging around 20-50kg of spares with me.

My next trip I will carry a new fan belt (as its getting time), a new radiator hose (as its getting time, and you can not get it from anywhere else) and do a good check of my beast before I go.. thats about it, the rest can be brought if needed...
