    diff lock light

    Hi all,

    99 TD5 Auto Disco II

    I just recently made my self a very basic CDL mechanism as per http://www.rovershoppe.com/cdl_handle.html.

    Cost me about $5.00 to make and an hour of my time. Prior to that I had a crappy choke cable mechanism to turn off and on.

    I don't want to spend big $ to get anything else

    I can feel the spigot turn and I can also feel when I drive my bus if the CDL is engaged or not, however the light on the dash does not come on when it is engaged.

    I suspect that its just the sensor in the transfer case.

    Has anyone heard if they are adjustable or not?

    The switch is a fixed position switch - and from what I can see there is no adjustment. There is a spacer which ensures that the switch is set to the correct height

    Check the basics first - connections on the switch, then with the CDL locked - check for continuity between the two terminals on the switch - if open circuit - poss switch faulty, if open circuit check input /output voltage - if okay check bulb on instrument panel.

    My "in-car" version of this sometimes does the same both locking then un-locking.Im pretty sure yours hasnt engaged properly yet.With mine I turn it as far as it goes without forcing,move forward a tad whilst applying pressure and bingo it locks in and lights up.When un locking make sure you are steering straight and then reverse a bit,it will unlock much easier.

    You can adjust the sensor for the CDL, get your self the LT230 rebuild manual and read up how to do it(google it, i found a few places to download it in pdf format). You might wanna check your switch works too, mine didnt when i first got my CDL setup working, had to get another one. Just unscrew it from the transfercase and check it with a mutlimeter. When you screw back in i tihnk it is a case of locking the CDL and screwing it in far enough with the wires hooked up till you get the CDL light on then screw down the locking nut to hold its position and test it. If you screw it in to far apparently it can cause issues and bind up on things inside the transfercase.

    It might be as simple as the wiring not being hooked up to the switch, i had to find it in mine, taped into the loom and hook it up, try connecting the 2 wires without the switch to see if the CDL light comes on then go from there.

    So, what in-car version do you have?

    In two weeks time I am taking off for a 9 month hol around OZ.

    Its cost me a fortune so far to get setup, caravan etc so I could not face spending big $ on a diff lock, especially since there is every chance I will sell the car when I get back

    Anyway, my problem is fixed

    When I found the sensor, I could see that the one of the spade connectors had come off.

    Put in back on, pulled the leave and bingo, it all works.

    I wish all problem were that simple

    They are! Just like the switch its just a matter of knowing what to look for!

    I made a bracket that bolts to the CDL acuator,it has socket set extensions and 2 socket set unijoints.Comes up thru the console with a small handle on it.Works really well,main complaint is it rattles sometimes,but I have a rubber spacer under it I twist and the rattle stops.

    Yes, I have seen that one as well on the net.

    Its not bad either. I considered that as well, but time is against me and If I have to grin and bear this for 9 months, so be it.

    Someone , made me a chock cable gizmo that came up through the consol. It did not work very well. It would not disengage the CDL very well, meaning I often had to go underneath the car with a screw driver and leaver it over.

    It also looked ugly. At least this is all hidden out of the way. The downside to that is that I have to jump in and out of car to engaged, disengage it

    Like yours, this is fool proof in so far as there is not much on it that can break

    Hi John
    Before I made mine I just drove the front right up onto a rock or bank and got underneath with a 10mm spanner and locked it.Just got into the habit of locking it before off roading and being bogged with it unlocked.
    If you wish to retain traction control/ABS with your method stall stop the vehicle(assuming its manual) and leave the key ON.The fuel pump is timed and will stop running.
    Enjoy the trip,keep posting if possible so we know how your going.
