sounds like it can't draw enough current maybe
hi all... again
have a friend using a warns 9.5XP this is what happens
winch is able to reel and letout and even pull a defender on a straightaway. but once extra load is added as in stuck in a mud.. even a mild one.. the winch cease completely.
have changed the cables and the 2 batteries and it still doesnt work.. any ideas?
sent an email to warns but havent gotten any reply as yet.. anybody got the same problem? We do not have any dealer close by or service center. most prob have to self fix..
anybody had or came across this problem on a winch before?![]()
sounds like it can't draw enough current maybe

What vehicle is it in? A defender?
How much wire was on the drum? Did you test it near the bottom layer?
Clean all the earths. Upgrade the cabling to welding stuff, particularly if a Defender. Theres a long path back to the battery, not so bad in other cars with batteries under the bonnet. Rewire so that there's a lead back to the battery, if a Defender, don't rely on the chassis earth principle.
Is there a solenoid or smart charger between the batteries? If the latter, it'll only be 20 amps or so, you're probably running down one battery alone. Get something about 200 amps.
You should be able to work out what's not coping by carefully testing what's hot - winch motor? cables? Double line it & load it up - but don't stall the winch.
And don't expect it to recover on just a single line pull - a lot of recoveries need a double line.
I was disappointed with my hi-mount after moving it from disco to defender. Chucking the Warn cabling & upgrading made a big difference.

G'day AT![]()
Cabling to winch is too light or the load is too heavy![]()
Yep, agree with the others. Make sure the earth cable goes directly from the winch to the battery....not to the chassis.
Make sure there is a separate earth cable from the winch body back to the battery. Had the same prob with my Warn 8000kg; I'd taken it from another car and it didn't have one on the donor vehicle. Works great now!
I agree with the comments above, I have one and most of the time it works fine. Only on a couple of occasions have I had to use a pulley block to double the pulling strength both times was in serious mud that I had trouble even pulling the cable out in.
cheers Blythe
thanks for all the input.. i think its not the load.. we were pulling a vitara(small one) and it cant work.. will try out the earthing suggestion..
Its on a defender..
the cables seems fine.. not nested or anything like that..
i heard from another dude its might be something to do with the brushing.. not sure whats that though.. any ideas.
will try the electrical cabling first.
thanks again
It may have twin batteries but check they are ok . Sounds to me that they may be on their last legs. Means nothing if you have two nackered batteries. The winch draws huge amounts of power when it starts to work.
So my on would be check the power levals and charging of the batties and the cabling of the winch.
In my past , i have found that the winch will work or not , and not in between. Problems are normally it will not do anything , or will work but no real power .This problem is always down to the amount of juice it is getting

Silly question mayby but do you have the engine running, a winch will suck your batterys dry pretty quick without the engine running.
